So basically I have come here as my last resort. My mother's computer seems to have been acting very strangely lately. The computer is much slower than it was before and I have tried my best to get rid of all the spyware/viruses but it still seems to be very slow. The computer is Dell XPS 200 with a Pentium D, 2 gigs of RAM, and with the 82945g express chipset. It is also running XP Media Center Edition and is fully up to date (Soon to be moving on to SP3 though). Included below is a copy of a hijackthis log file. I hope that anyone can help me restore my mother's computer to full capacity.

Thanks for the reply, but when dss has finished and closed itself, it doesn't produce any text files...
Is there something wrong with what i'm doing?

That does not look to bad - a few house keeping bits to do

Make sure that DSS.exe is located on your Desktop.
Click on your START button, then choose Run. A little box will appear.
Now copy and paste all the following in bold (including the "" marks) into the run box and click OK.

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

This will start DSS in a different way. A small window will appear.
Click on the Scan button.
If it finds faulty file associations, they will appear in red beside a checkbox. If this occurs, just place a tick in the boxes in question.
Click the Fix button.
Re-scan and save a logfile. By default, it will save as daft.txt.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Wow that defrag took a lot longer than I thought, but all seems well . I let my mom tried it and she seems to be content so I guess everything's done. Thanks for the help, I totally appreciate the effort it takes to read those logs, it seems like it would take forever.
