Hard drive skipping

I'm betting your HDD is toast.

Let's see if Linux can see it. Download Puppy Linux (top one in the list), and burn it to a cd just as you did the RC.iso disk. Boot your machine using that disk. It will run in the memory rather than from the HDD so it may allow us a peek under the hood...so to speak.

You'll have to mount the drive, if it shows up, by clicking on the Drive icon that will appear on your desktop.

gave it a try, got the following:

boot:
Loading isolinux: Disk error 80, AX = 4290, drive 9F

Boot failed: press a key to retry

That about sums it up. Even Linux can't find the drive.

I'd say you need a new HDD...... :)

If you have important files on the drive that you need to recover, it would be a good idea to not try too much more. You may be able to slave the drive to the new master and recover the files. Usually, when a drive disappears like that, though, it's because the drive's controller board has gone bad.

ok. i appreciate all your help though. whats an average cost for a new HDD (a reliable brand)?

Prices on HDD's are coming down all the time. Sample Prices

Stay with Seagates or Western Digitals.

Nope...you will need to look at drives like These or order from the manufacturer.
