I have a Dell laptop Inspiron 5100 with Windows XP.
I have had it several years with very few problems....however, a couple of month ago I went to use my CD and it didn't work.
When I open "my computer, it doesn't show any CD drive to open (when I open the compartment, I can see that it has been running...still spinning)
I don't use the CD drive very often and can't figure out what to do....help.

Hello tennistm...

Click Start, then Run, type regedit and click "Ok"

In the left pane, expand (click +) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SYSTEM, then CurrentControlSet, then Control, then Class, and click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

In the right pane, are UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters listed?

In the left pane, right click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and choose "Export". Name this file oldfilters and save it to your desktop.
In the right pane, right click on LowerFilters and choose "Delete"...accept the change.

Close Registry Editor and reboot. See if your drive is now shown and operates properly after restarting.
