I am posting another thread over at the XP discussion but I thought I would drop off a log file here to see if I have in fact contracted some disease. I am also sure that I have way much more garbage in my hard drive than needed. I just switched over to Comcast Cable hi speed, and along with it came the McAfee pkg. With that , do you think I really need AVAST.....SPYBOT....Ad Aware SE....Anti-Spyware....etc? Would love your opinion. Also, is it really needed to keep the old Windows 98 backup files (It was REC: that I do so when I changed to XP 2 years ago. I have both my 98 & XP cd's if needed. I do want to keep Cleanup, which I run whenever I do a defrag.

Out of 37 GB, I have 20% free space.....Maybe that is why it took over 4 minutes to get here this afternoon. (once I get to a site, I can fly through the pages. It just takes forever to get from one to another. I called Comcast and they gave me a clean sheet from their end.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

You have both Avast and Mcafee running and thats a big no no, more than one AV program can cause many issues. Your call but you need to uninstall one.

I would keep Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware and remove Antispyware. As far as the win98 files you most likely wont need them but your call to remove them.



Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

• This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
• Under Main choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up


The rest of your log looks fine If you want to check further you can run this free online virus scanner from Kaspersky and post the report, have to warn you depending on your system it could take a few hours.

Run this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:

• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  
• Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

From the other discussion thread I was also warned about the two anti-virus. So, I got rid of McAfee and kept Avast. (at their direction due to the amount of space that McAfee takes up)

It turned out that IE was the big problem. One of the staff suggested that I switch my IP to Firefox. I did that and everything is back to running smooth and fast. One problem I now have is that every time I go to a new URL, I hear a horn, and an error message pops up saying " widows can not find the page, along with the URL for that page and the fact that I should check the spelling" Although the page always loads along with the error message and I have to click OK to get rid of the error message. Is there a way to stop the error message from appearing? (this problem started with the switch to Firefox)

I cleared the two items you suggested and ran the AFT. cleaner. I also tried to run the Kaspersky, but it said I had to have Administrative Priv.

One last question: I have been trying to install a download of Real Player 11 Gold. During the installation I get the error message "you don't currently have Administrative access to windows registry. Please see system administrator to download Real Player" I googled the message and it seems to be a wide spread common problem. One that nobody at any of the blogs I checked , including Real.com tech blog, seemed to have a working answer for. So, I am thinking of getting Roxio Easy Media Creator 10.........In your opinion, is this the best out there, or do you use something better and cheaper?

Hi,

Your log looks fine so this is most likely windows related, you can try a few things to correct the problem.

Here is a fix to repair Internet Explorer
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

Open up Firefox and go to Help> About and make sure you have the current version which is 2.0.0.14, if not try updating it and see if it fixes the problem.


As this problem appears as a windows issue this is as far as I can go as this forum is for Malware Removal Only, so you should post back to the XP forum and tell them your clean and they can proceed with helping you.
