My computer only has the 8 bit resolution and the desktop is so large you can't read anything. The properties will allow you to change settings but the only setting there is 8 bit :)

whats the make and model of your computer
chances are you need to install video drivers
they can be found online but need make and model number

Drivers have been installed and things are back to normal.
