Okay, here is the new HJT log. computer seems to be running real well. Still has that APCMain bar pop upon reboot though. Not sure what the heck that is. Again, it says "Please reinstall performance center". We can deal with that later though.

If you want to stop that, then fix this entry with HijackThis

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Performance Center] "C:\Program Files\Ascentive\Performance Center\APCMain.exe" -m

Let me know how that goes

Well, that did it. Thanks! This website is amazing! You guys respond lightning fast and really have helped a lot so far. I wish I had known about this a long time ago. So as far as the Virtum-Gen virus and the Mal VB/M goes? Do I just run a Sweep or is there still more to look into? Thanks again.

It is 100% gone, no need to run any scans :)

Few things left to do

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Your using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your pc open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here :
http://www.adobe.com.../readstep2.html

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Well, my SS did its daily scan a little bit ago, and low and behold, that stupid Troj/Virtum-Gen is still hanging around. There is also, a new one that says "Quarantine Failed" next to it. It is Mal/EncPk-BW. So I guess we aren't there quite yet..... :) I hate viruses...lol.

Honestly I wouldn't worry, chances are that is the stuff we quarantined or orphaned registry entries

Post the SS log here if you want me to remove them, although you are clean

The SS log is super long. So I hate to do that to ya. What does all that mean then? Will that eventually go away? Or what? I mean, it would be a great piece of mind if it wasn't on there I guess.....

It's ok, go ahead and post it here, attach it though if it is as long as you say it is

Should be able to remove everything it finds

Here it is....

I am going out of town at 3a tonight. So, if we can't figure this out by then I will just have to get back with you when I get back late next Sun. Just a heads up. No rush though. Just didn't want you wandering what the heck happened for a week....

Thats nothing to worry about. If you follow my steps in Post #23 then most of that will be removed from the SpySweeper log

Any other questions or problems ?
