This is my second topic. I recently had a problem with TR/Vundo.Gen and used hijackthis and combofix to eliminate that problem - since then, my computer, although it initially seemed to have improved, is doing some very strange things, including taking an abnormally long time to connect to any network and not necessarily showing that it actually is connected on the start bar icon, somehow uninstalling my audio output device, making internet explorer and firefox run abnormally slowly, and causing downloads or anything imbedded that is loading to take a very, very long time to do so, if at all. I am convinced that this is not a simple vista issue, because it has never acted like this before the TR/Vundo.Gen and its 'aftermath.' I am wondering if there are other trojans that have not been picked up.

Ok - sounds great! Actually, I successfully reinstalled the driver for my speakers from the dell website, so that is not an issue anymore.

1. Install an Antivirus
------------------------------------------------

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic - Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program that has an autoprotect feature on, uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should have an autoprotect feature on at a time.

2. Install a Firewall
------------------------------------------------

It is vital that you have a firewall. The one that comes with Windows XP is not sufficient in that it only checks incoming data. I recommend selecting one of the following free firewalls. Be sure to only install one.

3. Update Java
------------------------------------------------

Updating Java and Clearing Cache

• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
• It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
  Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
• If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6
• After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
• Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
• There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
  Downloaded Applets
  Downloaded Applications
  Other Files
• Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
  Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
• Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

4. Deckard's System Scanner
------------------------------------------------

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.

• Close all other windows before proceeding.
• Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
• When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Well, so far I have installed Comodo, and it found two defense alerts that say:

"avast.setup could not be recognized and it is about to modify the contents of C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\clnr0dll.dll, and C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\.exts0.dll. You must make sure avast.setup is a safe application before allowing this request."

Like I said in my first post, I had avast installed already. Should I allow its request to modify it or block it? Also, how should I make sure that it is a safe application if i need to modify it? I expect to see more of these alerts....and they are red alerts as well.....

avast.setup is a process that takes care of auto updating. It requires internet access and should be permitted.

The reason I no longer use Comodo is for the exact reason your experiencing. It flags EVERYTHING that tries to access the internet. Some people like that some don't. Sometimes a certain program has 10 or 20 individual processes that need access to the internet and you have to allow each and every single one. Little bit tedious in my opinion.

Allow that process access and follow the rest of the steps I outlines in my previous post.
