Hi there here is my hjt log computer has been running slow and kaspersky keeps picking up things. I think its the smss.exe but not 100 percent sure any help would be greatly appreciated

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

• This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
• Under Main choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up






Run this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
  
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  
• Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  
• Standard
  
• Scan Options:
  
• Scan Archives
  
• Scan Mail Bases
  
• Click OK
  
• Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  
• This will program will start and scan your system.
  
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  
• Now click on the Save as Text button:
  
• Save the file to your desktop.

Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.

hi thanks for your reply I have done the above and this is what I got from hijack this this time kaspersky file attached too but nothing showed up on it is the im still there its not in my add remove in the control panel so don't know if I got rid of it or its hiding somewhere my kids would of added that the little terrors

Hi Emma,

I am not sure if I am following what your saying. If your referring to this file C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe its a legitimate windows file and is needed for windows to run. Read about it here.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

• This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
• Under Main choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up



The rest of your log looks fine Lets run the free online virus scanner from Kaspersky and see what it comes up with.

Run this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
  
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  
• Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  
• Standard
  
• Scan Options:
  
• Scan Archives
  
• Scan Mail Bases
  
• Click OK
  
• Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  
• This will program will start and scan your system.
  
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  
• Now click on the Save as Text button:
  
• Save the file to your desktop.

Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.

HI DONT KNOW WHERE I CONFUSED YOU BUT I DID EVERYTHING YOU SAID AND POSTED IT DIDNT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE FILE YOU WROTE DOWN ONE THING I HAVE NOTICED WHEN I DO CONTROL ALT DELETE IS I HAVE A MSIMS.EXE AND WHEN I DO A SEARCH ON IT IT SAYS THAT ITS NOT GOOD DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS THERE?

Emma,

MSIMS.EXE is related to your Outlook Express mail.

Your log is clean, no malware on it. You never ran Kaspersky and posted the log like I asked. This forum is for the removal of malware only and since the problem your having appears to be windows related I suggest you post in this forum.
