Hello one and all at Geeks to Go! It appears I contracted a couple of virus' yesterday, as well as some annoying pop ups that won't go away. After looking at some other websites, the way you do your thing is very profesional and seems like problem solving is very one on one. After reading extensively through all your suggestions and trying them, I have yet to rid my computer of its problems. I cannot delete the popuper.exe file that is causing the pop ups I am having, and I think I may have some remanants of the smitfraud virus (even though I followed one thread to get rid of it). Since you are extremely busy in the HJT section, I followed the suggestion of posting an Ad-Aware SE logfile here. Unfortunatley, bfore I found this site, I went through all the basic utilities like HJT, Ad-Aware, Registry Editor, and Crap Cleaner. I did not save the logfiles or any data from these (hopefully it will not hinder progress). I also ran Panda Software's online virus scanner, as well as the newest updated version of AVG Micro's free anti-virus program. Following the Ad-Aware logfile posting thread, I now have a logfile for my computer, even though no objects are found. I thank anybody who can help me get my computer back on the road, and I have no worries about reformating my hard drive (or using the system restore disc that originally came from the factory with this computer). Oh, and I am running Win XP. Thanks again for any help you can provide!

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

Press CTRL ALT DELETE to open Windows Task Manger. Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

List any files going to be deleted that are running

Exit Task Manager.

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field) MAKE SURE TO ENTER ALL FILE PATHS!:

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you recieve an error message "PendingRenameOperation...." and your computer doesn't restart, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

*Download and install Registrar Lite version 2.00
*Double click the purple Registrar Lite icon on your desktop.
*Copy the line below and paste it into the "Address" field (located at the top) of the program:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

*Click the "Go" button.
*It will take you into the "Policies" folder.
*Locate the "System" folder (in the right panel)
*If found, right-click on the System folder and go to Delete
*Be very careful that you only delete the System folder that is inside the Policies folder.

Reboot your computer again.

Done and done. I haven't seen any pop up adds or the little yellow triangle near the clock, but I don't think I've been on my system long enough for those to pop up. I followed all your steps Andy to the T. Rawe, I have already ran the Trend Micro onine virus scanner, but I shall do so again. One more question: How do I get my background color to change from black back to the original "teal' if you will? I have gotten rid of the message thats there, but have no other ideas.

Edit-
Ah, just realized something. The one instruction to boot into safe mode I did not do. Hitting F8 does not accomplish that for me, nor does hitting Esc. I am using a wireless keyboard if that matters (shouldn't, as I can always get into the BIOS by hitting Delete).

Anything mentioned in your manual of your wireless keyboard about safe mode?

When your pc loads the BIOS, does it show any instruction?

You should now be able to change the background.

Right click on the desktop,

Properties,

Desktop tab,

If you select none, there are some colours on the right hand side of that window.

Hopefully those will help.

Thank you so much Andy! Since about 6:00pm last night I have used my computer trouble free with no pop ups or virus'! After restarting my computer and fiddling around with some of the settings, I did end up getting the original blue as a background. Now I can reformat my computer worry free of having no virus' (needed to be done anyways). Once again, thanks so much!

To keep your computer safe
-Make sure you have all critical updates installed.
-To make sure that you have got a firewall running when your connected to the internet and Anti-virus software which has the latest updates.

Two great sites to check for good advice and top rated software are http://members.acces...ntomPhixer.html and http://www.spywareai...p?file=toprated
