I have Microsoft XP.
I had downloaded the following Freewares from different sites:

AnyMP4_MediaConverter_FreeVersion.exe
apex-free-pmp-converter.exe
videoaudioplayer.exe

I had installed and then uninstalled these programmes one by one, since they did not meet my requirements.
Now I find an entry in my Start Menu: 'Remote Assistance'.
I had not seen this entry earlier.
When I check the properties, I get the following information:

Description: Microsoft Remote Assistance
Target Type: Application
Target Location: system32
Target: %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\rcimlby.exe -LaunchRA
'rcimlby.exe' seems to be a genuine Microsoft application, from its properties.

Is some malicious application trying to control my PC? How do I guard myself against this? Can you please enlighten me?

RA is not really bad. here is a microsoft article on it. A lot of IT people like using it to remotely fix networked computers.

Not bad, but why is it in the Start menu? I think that is the real question.

Sure, unless you put it there, remove it. If it comes back then you may have picked up some malware.

That is exactly my worry, why is it in the Startmenu? I never put it in the start menu, suddenly noticed it now. I will remove it as you suggest and see what happens.
I also recall, on the same day when I downloaded, installed & uninstalled the Freewares, a close and trusted friend of mine had used my PC. He chatted with his friend using Yahoo and had downloaded a music file on my Desktop. But he said he was not aware of using/installing Remote assistance.

Dear Ztrucker,
I simply dragged the 'Remote Assistant' from Startmenu List to Recycle Bin. It has not reappeared in Startmenu after that. Thanks.
