IE Explorer 6.0 Is Painfully Slow under Win2000 OS

Does anyone have a clue why IE Explorer Ver 6.0.2800 would become so slow as to take minutes to "find" a site, and while it is "finding" that site, becomes non-controllable, ie you can't stop the search, close down the window, etc. The only thing you can do is control-alt-delete and start over. Is there any fix that will resolve this without reinstalling IE Explorer, updates, etc?
