This forum helped me a year ago and hopefully someone can help me again.

I've suddenly started getting popups advertising for anti-adware products. Also, certain websites (google, yahoo, myspace) are "locked up" and will not load, meaning when I try to go to the website the status bar does not do anything and just waits...

I've scanned with AVG and AdAware and found nothing out of the ordinary besides tracking cookies.

Here's my Hijack Log:

Hi darktower19

welcome back to geekstogo :)

i suspect one of the infections you have is hiding from the hijackthis log, but we will find it :)

in this post we will run a couple of scans to see where we stand.

====STEP 1====
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

====STEP 2====
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

====STEP 3====
Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet. For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that.

====STEP 4====
You may have some infections that target Hijackthis.
I will need you to rename Hijackthis:
To do this:
  • Go to Start
  • Right click and choose Explore
  • Navigate to this location C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\Hijackthis
  • Open the Hijackthis folder
  • Right click on the Hijackthis icon and click rename
  • rename it to Gotcha

In your next reply could i see:
1. the malwarebytes log
2. the combofix log
3. a new hijackthis log

The text from these files may exceed the maximum post length for this forum. Hence, you may need to post the information over 2 or more posts.

I got a little confused about the Recovery Console portion as I didn't find anywhere to download it in your links. Is it necessary?

in the notes to install combofix in the bleeping computer web site is a link How to install and use the Windows XP Recovery Console it is only necessary if we run into a severe problem with your system as a result of any malware. personally, i have never needed to call upon it, but i fully expect to at some point in the future. therefore, it is your call if you want to take that risk. if you dont have it, and if we need it you are likely going to have to reformat. given you have already run combofix and all was ok, the chances of a problem have somewhat lessened, but not gone away.

in this post we will remove the malware i can see in your logs and do another couple of scans to flush out any further infections. we will also reset your hosts file.

the scans will likely take 3 hours, quite possibly much longer. so just let them run.

====STEP 1====
1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\BM9bed81ae.xml

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{361ac05d-0e0d-11da-9aa9-806d6172696f}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{6d846060-f989-11dc-9e31-0015c50a86ee}]

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

I ran Combofix and when it finished (without asking for a reboot) my taskbar and all my desktop items disappeared. I let it sit for 30 minutes thinking it might not be done. I saved the log to my desktop and then restarted. It rebooted but then had some sort of error that came up on a blue screen forcing me to shutdown. When I turned back on, the combofix log on the desktop was gone. I found the following on the C:, but i'm not sure if it is from the second time i ran Combofix.

Uh... It looks like I pasted the SUPERAnti log twice instead of Hijack. I'll post the Hijack log once I get out of work today. Sorry, I was in a rush. Thanks for the help.

your logs are looking pretty good now.

the kaspersky scan picked up infected items that were either safely quarentined or sitting in your system restore (which we will clear at the end).

so, we will do one last DSS scan to see if that last combofix run worked.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

In your next reply could i see:
1. the DSS logs (though there may only be one)
2. and some idea of how your machine is running now

Hi darktower19

congratulations, your logs are clean :)

in this post we will clear away the fix tools (this is so that should you ever be re-infected, you will download updated versions and it will also remove the quarantined Malware from your computer), reset your restore points (there will be infections lurking in there) and i will leave you with some ideas on how to enhance the protection of your machine against future infection.

firstly, could you uninstall either SUPERantispyware or AVG antispyware. you only need one.

====STEP 1====
Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    Posted Image
you can now remove any other tools we used.

====STEP 2====
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

Instructions with screenshots to help is http://www.f-secure..../sfc_dis1.shtml

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

====IDEAS TO SPEED UP YOUR MACHINE====
this page http://users.telenet...owcomputer.html gives some good ideas on how to improve the efficiency of your machine and has one or two useful links to help your further.

====AND FINALLY====
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
