Hi,

I am new here and had a recent hijacking incident with Outerinfo (with subsequent Vundo and other Malware). I managed to finally get access to search engines after restarting in Safe Mode and rebooting comp. I followed up with a search for this adware and came across the forum info. I think I've managed to clean off (most of) my system, but I need a check to ensure that I'm clean, and could use some suggestions about additional anti-spy ware to prevent incidents from occurring. (I've been using Ad-aware 2007, but will probably keep SUPERantispyware installed, and I plan on going with AVG.) I temporarily installed Norton anti-virus and PC Tools Spyware Doctor but I'm probably going to eliminate them once my system is clean.

System:
Win XP (Boot Camp) SP2 (going to install the new Boot Camp update that recently came out and SP3 once my system is cleaned and restore point created).

I did not run Combofix. The Outerinfo uninstaller combined with the SUPERAntispyware appears to have resolved the issue, but need a check to make sure nothing is lurking. Also any recommended security settings for Win XP are appreciated so that I can properly protect my system (default), coupled with regular anti-spyware/virus checks.

I will be monitoring my account for the next several hours (minimum) to try to resolve this issue asap. I will also be available tomorrow if necessary.

Thank-you.

Hello

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi Rorschach thanks for your help.

I have not rebooted my computer but ran combofix and hijack this. If you need a reboot, let me know.
Also, I did install recovery console - I'm assuming that it was not detected because of no reboot?

Logs are as follows:

Hello

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\BMfb979358.xml
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxml3a.dll

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\migNT
C:\WINDOWS\system32\inf1
C:\WINDOWS\QW50b24gUG9ob3Jlc2tp
C:\Temp\berDrv11

Registry::

Driver::

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Go to this site:
http://www.virustotal.com/
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to the file:

C:\WINDOWS\system\_IWREMOV.EXE

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Once scanned, copy and paste the results as well in your next reply.

Also post a new HijackThis log

You can reboot your PC by the way

Hello

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {97bceb59-cfcd-4b16-a863-b3f72cf9f196} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {97bceb59-cfcd-4b16-a863-b3f72cf9f196} - (no file)
O18 - Protocol: qbwc - {FC598A64-626C-4447-85B8-53150405FD57} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqrqoon - ssqrqoon.dll (file missing)

2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

System seems to run smooth. I previously uninstalled Paltalk (I suspect that it may have been the original source or combined with other program source of the original leak). The hijack log shows a remnant of the program. Should I clear this off?

Following are the logs:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.11

You can if you want

Few things to do

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    Posted Image

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
here

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Thanks for all your help Rorschach. I'm using Firefox (2.0), but I have noticed that some programs (such as Paltalk) appear to use IE scripting for their advertisements. (Since I don't use IE I want to make sure my default settings have a high level of security.) I've already implemented some of the suggestions from the How did I get infected post: http://www.geekstogo...;page=How_did_I

While I'm going to keep Ad-Aware 2007 (pre-infected), I think I'm going to uninstall a bunch of the anti-virus programs now (as you suggested) and install AVG, and I'll review the other suggestions that you have made. I'll probably reinstall SuperAntiSpyware as well. I'm also going to set a recovery point once I uninstall these programs.

Thank you again. Outerinfo infected with Vundo is nasty, nasty. I don't normally do this sort of work and it took me quite a few hours over several days to even get access to the search engines. I hope that this will better prepare me against attacks in the future.

I appreciate all your efforts in assistance.
