OK, we need you to run this program first:

Download CWShredder http://www.greyknigh.../CWShredder.exe

Right click a blank part of your desktop & select New->Folder. Call it SPFix. Go to http://www.derbilk.de/404.html and download SpSeHjfix. Get the one that's specified for your Operating System. So if you have Windows 98, get the one that's listed for Windows 98.

Disconnect from the net and close all programs. Run SpSeHjfix and click on 'Start Disinfection'. When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process. The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

Now run the CWShredder and hit the Fix button.

Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log and the log that was created by SpSeHjfix.

Have also got the selective start notice coming up on reboot all the time, despite ticking the "do not show again" box.

How's it looking?

Thanks.

You may go to Start->Run, type in msconfig and hit OK. Then choose Normal startup. Restart. If you don't want some programs to be running at startup, go back to msconfig and go to the Startup tab. Only uncheck those programs you know for sure are not needed to run at startup (leave everything else alone) and hit ok.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key until menu shows up. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

c:\windows\system32\jkkndn.dll
c:\windows\system32\applfm.dll

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and double-click on the System icon. On the Performance tab click File System. Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check 'Disable System Restore'. Click OK. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart Windows. Now go back and uncheck that same box to enable system restore.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Hi, all OK until today - logged onto Google as usual, immediately advised of same trojan in system folder - file icgok.dll. Have deleted this in safe mode, do I need to go through the same routine again?

Is this a new infection or could the old one still be there?

Does ANY av programme stop this stuff....

Thanks.

Hi again,

HJT log following. Each time I access the web, the startpage trojan gets detected. Macafee succesfully deletes the file from the system folder, but the infected file still gets into the restore folder, rendering the restore function useless. A colleague has mentioned that my ISP may give me a static IP address which makes the likelihood of a hit more probable - is this correct?

Many thanks in advance.

Yes, with a static IP address, you are more vulnerable to attacks. But if you have the right protection tools, you should still be safe.

Try these out:

Download FixAgent http://www.greyknigh...py/FixAgent.zip and unzip it. Run FixAgent.exe. It should fix something. If nothing is fixed, skip to the next step for the HijackThis fixes. If something is found, also download home_missing_114 http://www.greyknigh...missing_114.zip and unzip it. Run the Home winkey missing batch file. Remember: ONLY run home_missing_114 if FixAgent found something.

Download AboutBuster http://www.greyknigh...AboutBuster.zip and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Update and then Check For Update to see if there are any updates. Close the program now.

Boot into Safe Mode:

Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Start->OK and then follow the rest of the prompts to scan (choose Yes/OK for all). It will ask you if you want a second scan, choose Yes. Save the log file and post it here.

Restart and do the following:

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool.

Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp (Use Link 3)

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file. This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything.
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN. When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane......
Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use &CTRL C &on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file
*Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files.

Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi,

Got as far as the mwav step. When I run mwav.exe, the files unzip into the win/temp folder. None of the installed exe files does anything. Have I made an error?

Thanks.

Try renaming that mwav.exe to something like mwavold.exe and then run it. If it still gives you problems, how about running in Safe Mode?

Must be something simple here.

1. Where did you download the zip file to? If you haven't done so already, try downloading it to your Desktop.

2. Where did you unzip it to? When you use the zip program it should ask you where you want to extract the files to. Make sure you don't choose the temp folder. Choose someplace else like your Desktop.

Have you tried running it in safe mode?
