Hi. I am new to Geeks to Go, so this is my first post.

My AOL Spyware Protection keeps on detecting Estalive (Adaware) and P.S Guard (Trojan). This is very annoying.

Other software such as Adaware, Spybot S&D, and Avast do not detect these.

How do I remove these 2 items (Estalive & P.S Guard)???

P.S. I am not that good with computers, so please keep things simple, or easy to follow instructions.

Many thanks.

Hello flash5513

I am Thunderbird1988 and I am going to remove your malwareproblems, if you have questions feel free to ask :)

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello flash5513,

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O16 - DPF: {24311111-1111-1121-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\eied_s7.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193457} - file://c:\ex.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193458} - file://c:\ex.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):

c:\eied_s7.cab
c:\ex.cab

After that, Reboot.

After that, please post a new log of Smitfraudfix and a new Hijackthislog.

The computers AOL Spyware Protection does not appear to keep on popping up like it used to, however it is still detecting Estalive (Adaware).
How do I remove this?

Thanks.

Hello flash5513,

The log looks clean, but I shall take a deeper look.

go to start>run and copy everything in the codebox below.
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{a2b7a0f0-b697-4a71-8d91-43443f57d7bb}" >> C:\look.txt

After that, please navigate to C:\look.txt open it, and post its contents. (it may be that the file is empty)

Please go HERE to run Panda's TotalScan
  • Select the bubble for Full scan
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • Then the scan will begin
  • When the scan completes, click the Save button on the right of Scan details
  • Save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the TotalScan report

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt along with the contents of look.txt nd the log op Panda's Totalscan in your next reply.

Hi,

I followed your initial instruction by going to start>run and copying everything in the codebox.

After that, I tried to navigate to C:\look.txt, but could not find anything looking like it!!

So, I carried on with your instructions to run Panda's TotalScan.

PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Avast anti-virus warned me that it detected:

Virus/Worm

Win32:CTX

So I stoppped the program from installing/downloading. I refuse to use this program. I just hope it hasn't made things worse.

Hello flash5513,

I have done a little research, and it seems that Avast recognizes some of the virus definitions of Panda Totalscan as a virus. the virus definitions are harmless, but they do contain some code of the virus to make the scanner able to recognize the virus. The virus definitions didn't make the situation worse.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

I have a question for you.

When I followed your initial instruction by going to start>run and copying everything below in the codebox, what did thid do to my system??

reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{a2b7a0f0-b697-4a71-8d91-43443f57d7bb}" >> C:\look.txt

Hello flash5513,

I have a question for you.

When I followed your initial instruction by going to start>run and copying everything below in the codebox, what did thid do to my system??

reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{a2b7a0f0-b697-4a71-8d91-43443f57d7bb}" >> C:\look.txt

It doesn't change anything. It is supposed to give some information about a keyy in the regsitry ( the registry is the place where most of the Windows settings are saved.) Spywaredoctor is known to add that key to protect Windows against Estalive, and AOL might have thougth it would be malware.

It seems I have forgotten some part of the instructions. I have forgotten to ask you to click on ok after copying the codebox into the runbox. Could you do that, and then check if C:\look.txt exists and if it does, could you post the contents of it in your nest post?

your DSS log looks clean.
