I found out I was infected with Trojandowloader.XS. I've downloaded and run Ad-Aware 2007, and some other scanning tools but I wasn't able to clean the malware.

Symptoms:
- Unable to access Task Manager or Regedit ("Has been disabled for you by and Administrator" messsage)
- Desktop background changed to a red one saying my security's compromised, and with a link to "fix" it.
- Unknown system alerts saying that "The computer is running slowly because of spyware infection", but those are not legit.
- Slow connection whatsoever

Here's my HijackThis log, please help me!

Hi Zantetsuken and welcome to the forums.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • I recommend you make a backup of any data that you have created, such as documents, pictures, music, ect... before we begin the fix.

Good work so far. Here is what I suggest you do next.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log

Also please let me know how it's running at this point.

Thanks for the answer. I've been working all these days, and I believe I removed the virus, because I found its "master" .dll, "sockins32.dll", in the system32 folder. I followed some instructions I've read, and I deleted it successfully, along with the Registery entries mentioned there. Having found the source, I've digged deep within the Registery to find all its instances, and I've found the .htmls that were replacing my desktop and such. My previous HijackThis logfile showed many instances of that item.

Now there's something that is concerning me.
My AVG Antivirus 7.5 found a Trojan in SmitFraudFix v2.320, which I used for all these testing, called "Trojan Horse Constructor.BRV". I've though that tool was meant to remove malware, not install it... The "trojan" was in my system32 folder as well, with the following name: "IEDFix.exe", which I removed.

I've re-run HijackThis again, after all the cleaning, and it looks this way:

Do you think I should run SDFix as well, now? I'm scared that I might find another malware as in SmithFraudFix...
My computer now seems to be running smoothly, with no problems. But I seriously doubt that my antivirus is trustworthy.

Thanks for your response and support.

PS: Please apologize my lack of English language-knowledge. For I am not English-native.

Your log appears clean. If all is running well then you should be OK without SDFix.

Let me re-assure you, smitfraudfix is NOT Malware, nor are the tools it uses. That is a false positive that sometimes happens with these tools. By nature they appear to be malicious, but that one should be on the list for AVG.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 6.
  • Go to the Sun Java Website
  • Click on the download button next to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6
  • Check the circle next to I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click on the link Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

If all is well you should be good here. Let me know how you make out.

I've installed the new Java Runtime, with no problems.

The computer is doing fine, running as always (quite good, custom builded it).

I firmly believe I've removed the virus now.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Anything else I should do?

If all is well then just some final words...

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some free and evalutation versions that provide
better security than the Windows Firewall. Comodo
Outpost Firewall
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some other available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Spybot: Search And Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

Install Ad-Aware - Ad-Aware SE You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Use Zoned Out -
Zoned Out will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the website.

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

I do not use System Restore, I find that it slows my system down, but I will check that out.

I DO use a Firewall, I use Windows Firewall. I also visit Windows Update most regulary, and update all my anti-malware programs.

I use AVG Antivirus 7.5, CCleaner, a-squared, and I will check those other programs you've mentioned. But, being a gamer as I am, I need to squeeze every inch of performance on my system, and I do recognize it's been my fault that I've been infected with this malware, given that I ran a software I knew it wasn't safe, but was distracted and didn't notice the icon wasn't exactly a .rar type.

Thanks for all your tips.
