Right click MY COMPUTER, choose PROPERTIES, choose HARDWARE, choose DEVICE MANAGER, scroll down to sound, video and game controllers....
if yellow ! is seen, delete and reboot.
Windows will redetect.

i deleted the USB Audio Device since it had a yello ! i rebooted and no luck.

So, it has returned and it has a yellow ! on it....double click it...what does it tell you?
Update the driver ? (good idea regardless)

it has not returned. in my thinkpad config, i have no audio device for playback. states "disable" cannot switch to "enable".... windows error message when media file opened..... "one or more driver(s) driver not available or properly installed.... audio"
