Hi debra61,

I am currently reviewing your log and will post back soon.

Please take note of the following points.
  • I am still in training, this means that I need all my replies to be approved by an expert, hence there may be a slight delay between my posts. Also please accept that there may be a time difference between us, If you are not in the GMT +1 time zone, than you can expect a slight delay.
  • Please do not run any tools other than what I request of you to run. Some of the tools we will use are very powerful, and using them without the required knowledge could cause more damage and prove to be more troublesome than the problem you are currently facing.
  • If at any time you have a doubt about what you are to do, please stop there and ask. No question is considered dumb here at GeeksToGo!.

Thanks,

Mike :)

Hi again debra61,

Please follow my instructions in the order they were given, if you come across something you don't understand or don't feel comfortable doing, don't hesitate to ask and I will get you sorted out :)

A question, Did you willfully install items related to Crawler.com, such as Spyware Terminator? Please answer this in your next reply.

Preparation

We will need to temporarily disable Spybot Search & Destroy as it may conflict with our fixes.

Spybot S&D (Teatimer)

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step 1. Uploading a suspicious file

We will need to unhide hidden system files temporarily.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Please go to Uploadmalware to upload a suspicious file for analysis.
  • Enter your username from this forum
  • Copy and paste the link to this thread
  • Browse for this filename: C:\WINDOWS\b2new.exe
  • In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file
  • Click on Send File
Please REHIDE the files by following the above steps but check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.

Step 2. Combofix

Please go here and install the Recovery Console.

Download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Step 3. Moving Hijack This

You are currently using HijackThis from a temporary directory, this can cause problems.
HijackThis creates backups, these are needed in case of any recovery issues.
Please create a directory on your C:\ drive called C:\HJT, download and unzip HijackThis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on.

STEPS For Creating Folder
1. Please go to My Computer, open your C:\ drive, Select: New >> Folder and name the folder HJT.

2. Download HijackThis to the new folder:

3. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

4. Close ALL windows except HJT

5. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

6. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')
Please make sure you post the entire log including the top portion:

In your next reply

Please post the log from ComboFix (located at C:\Combofix.txt)
A new Hijack This log.

Mike,
I did install spyware terminator before....I done everything you asked except the recovery
console.I am unable to do that because I do not have a windows cd. The school that my son
attends gave him the computer... After I ran the combofix the blue warning screen is gone :)
I hope thats a good sign. His computer seems to be running fairly well. Here is the logs from combofix
and hijackthis.... Thank you so much for all your help
Debra

Hi again Debra61,

Combofix found alot of baddies that we will remove now. It's fine that you couldn't install the recovery console through your CD, we will do this now using another method. There is alot to take in this post, so go slowly and take your time working through it :)

Thank you for answering my question before. The reason I had asked you this is because through my research I found out that Spyware Terminator was previously listed as a "Rouge AntiSpyware" program. Here is an excerpt from Spyware Warrior:

We originally listed Spyware Terminator on this page out of concerns that Crawler, the company behind the product, had established connections with IBIS, a well known adware distributor responsible for such adware programs as Wintools, Websearch, & Huntbar. Although we found no problems in our initial testing with Spyware Terminator, and while the vendor itself announced that it was exiting the adware business (1), we decided out of caution to impose a three month probation period before we would consider re-testing and, if warranted, de-listing the the product from the Rogue/Suspect list. During that three month probation period we monitored the behavior of IBIS and Crawler. At the end of the three month probation period we re-tested Spyware Terminator, again finding no problems serious enough to justify listing the program on this page. As the vendor involved has not been involved in the distribution of adware for many months, and as the program itself exhibits no problems serious enough to warrant mention on this page, we have decided to de-list Spyware Terminator from the Rogue/Suspect list and can no longer regard the program to be "rogue/suspect."

So all in all this program is safe for you to have and if you want to continue using it you may, I just wanted you to be informed of what this products history is.

Otherwise you may uninstall Spyware Terminator through Add or Remove programs (by going to start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs), and delete the following folders:

C:\Program Files\Spyware Terminator
C:\Documents and Settings\Anthony\Application Data\Spyware Terminator
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spyware Terminator
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Spyware Terminator

And fix these lines in Hijack This:
O8 - Extra context menu item: Crawler Search - tbr:iemenu
O23 - Service: Spyware Terminator Realtime Shield Service (sp_rssrv) - Crawler.com - C:\Program Files\Spyware Terminator\sp_rsser.exe

Now let's get on to the real bad stuff.

Step 1. Installing the Recovery Console

I would like you to install the Recovery Console.
The Windows recovery console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System.

Posted Image

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Hi debra61,

Your logs look clean :)

Please delete these two folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine

Now let's remove the tools we used.

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
Posted Image
Notice the space between the x and / -- That needs to be there.

Step 1. Configuring Automatic Updates

Click the Automatic Updates tab. Choose the update option that best suits your needs, but be sure that Automatic Updates is not turned off. Windows XP will now notify you and download important updates and security patches as they become available.
Click "OK" to save your new settings and close the System Properties dialogue.

Step 2. Preventing future infection

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
http://www.spywarewa...uc/resource.htm

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.o...oducts/firefox/

Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

There are many programs that can be used for your protection, most falling within the three main categories of anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall. Please be careful to never run more than one program of the same category in resident mode, as conflicts between the different programs can actually decrease your protection.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. :)
