Geeks to Go:

I'm scanned through some other posts with the same issue, but it appears that each infection is unique. Here is my hijack this log....in addition, I've scanned with several malware/ad-ware/spyware agents and it still won't be gone. Response time is lagging horribly. Not sure where my son went to get this virus, but now it appears to be well entrenched.

Thanks in Advance

Hi there and sorry for the delay - if I could have a fresh look at your system, plus what are your symptoms ?

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Essexboy,

Thanks for getting back. My turn to appologize; was out of town for the weekend. Here are the two Deckard logs (below). The symptoms I have are, most noteably when I go to Yahoo! pages, a SpyBot S&D message that pops up identifying a warning as replicated here:

URL: Http://ad.yieldmanager.com/st?ad_type=ifrm
ID as: Right Media

This typically won't start until I go to Yahoo!, but then it keeps coming and coming. Only option is to DENY change.

Thanks in advance for your support!!!

Not a great deal ther but one dubious folder in your system32 which I will remove. More importantly your system is insecure

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

THEN

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\bkEur01
    Purity
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

FINALLY FOR NOW

Download OTScanit to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All User Accounts
  • Check the Radio buttons for Files/Folders Created Within 90 Days and Files/Folders Modified Within 90 Days
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    • Reg - Desktop Components
    • Reg - Disabled MS Config Items
    • File - Additional Folder Scans
    • File - Purity Scan
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

Essexboy,

Followed instructions. Here is the output of the OTMoveIt2 scan:

< Purity >

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.2 log created on 05192008_161916

I have attached the OTScanit log as well.

I will wait for next steps. Thanks for ongoing help!!!

Still nothing readilly apparent showing. So on completion of this element I will run a general cleaning tool to see if that reveals anything

Start OTScanit. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

[Files/Folders - Modified Within 90 days]
NY -> PCCNTMON.INI -> %SystemRoot%\PCCNTMON.INI
[Empty Temp Folders]

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here along with a new Hijackthis log.

I will review the information when it comes back in.

Also let me know of any problems you encountered performing the steps above or any continuing problems you are still having with the computer.

THEN

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Essexboy,

Got the link for disabling virusware, however, it does not address ad-aware. aawservice.exe is in the Task Manager. If I halt the process, it restarts. Do I need to shut this one down before I proceed?

:) Okay, here goes:

1. I ran OTScanit and it completed fine

[Files/Folders - Modified Within 90 days]
C:\WINDOWS\PCCNTMON.INI moved successfully.
[Empty Temp Folders]
User's Temp folder emptied.
User's Temporary Internet Files folder emptied.
User's Internet Explorer cache folder emptied.
Local Service Temp folder emptied.
File delete failed. C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat scheduled to be deleted on reboot.
Local Service Temporary Internet Files folder emptied.
Windows Temp folder emptied.
Java cache emptied.
RecycleBin -> emptied.
< End of fix log >
OTScanIt by OldTimer - Version 1.0.14.1 fix logfile created on 05202008_170809

Files moved on Reboot...
File move failed. C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat scheduled to be moved on reboot.

2. I ran a new HiJack log (attached)

3. I ran Combofix....twice

The first time i ran it, i thought i had disabled all the virus stuff, but it seems that teatimer was still open, so spybot flagged all the changes. I approved them all, and the log came up. However, after the log displayed, the PC was non-responsive: no menu bar at bottom, no start button response, no Windows+E button response.... I rebooted, shut down ALL the virus stuff, reran combo and got the log again with no interuptions....however, the PC was again non-responsive. I rebooted.

I am hopeful that the teatimer incident had no impact. I will await your advice.

Cheers,

Man from Uncle

OK well there is nothing there that I can see

Lets clear your temp files first

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP, Vista and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

THEN

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

But I feel it may be related to the Yahoo website

:) Really? Nothing there.... Must be yahoo! I come in and out of this website and get no issues.

Think I should disable Spy Bot/Tea Timer? Or just learn to ignore the message after a visit to Yahoo?

Here is the Silent Runners log

It might be worth deleting your cookies when you have finished with the Yahoo site

In IE7 select Tools
Then Delete browsing history

Try that out when you visit Yahoo and let me know what happens

:) That works, sort of....

I went to Yahoo! and got the same SpyBot warning about the malware. I hit deny. I went to my ISP's home page, and got the message again. I deleted cookies and then went back to my ISP....no warning.

:) But.....do I have to do that every time I go to Yahoo! I'm trying to fix this PC up for my son (he's 12) and that is a lot of steps for a kid to follow (deleting cookies) and Yahoo is HIS email provider!?

IF there doesn't appear to be anything wrong, is there a way to set my IE setting so that Yahoo! won't try whatever its trying to do?

Thanks (as always)

MfU

OK lets now block the cookies from that site

Select Tools > Internet Options
Select the Privacy tab
Select the Sites button
Type in (...or paste) ad.yieldmanager.com
Click block
Click Apply

Then visit yahoo again :)

:) Still there!

I blocked the address, but the message still comes up. Seems to only be there when I'm on Yahoo! site. I've attached a screen print of the message, in case that helps.

Seems like we're at the end of the rope, eh?

Anything else you can think of?
