I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop running windows XP w/ SP2. Lately when I boot up it is terribly slow at everything. I found that one svchost in the task manager was consuming about 50% CPU. Once I terminate that one it speeds up.

However, most all programs freeze up after 4-5 minutes and I have to reboot. I am just wondering if anyone can take the time to tell me if I have a malware problem. I followed the instructions in the "before you post" thread and have the latest hijack this log below. Thanks for any help or redirection that you can give me.

I don't think this is a malware related issue. If you look at your startup programs, you have a whole load or processes from your CA security software. I personally never like these software bundles and recommend removing them and installing individual antivirus/antispyware programs instead. You can use AVG Free Edition. It has both the virus and spyware scanners without any extra bloatware. Make sure you uninstall CA first if you intend to do this.

You might also want to disable some other startup programs you don't need. To do this, go to Start->Run, copy/paste in msconfig and hit OK. Then go to the Startup tab and uncheck programs you don't need to be always running whenever you startup your computer....these include Adobe, Microsoft Office, Java, Nero, Real, etc.

Thank you for your help. After several hours of pulling my hair out I finally realized that it was a problem with Windows Updates. I don't remember where I read it but it seems that Windows Update Agent was updated and this has been causing the problem for about a week on different machines. For anyone else, here is Microsoft's solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

Download and install the 927891 update and then download and install Windows Update Agent 3.0

This fixed the problem for most users however it didn't work for me. I used system restore to return the settings to a week ago. This worked fine and everything is back to normal. Thanks Microsoft
