So far I have scanned with Spy-Bot, Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes, and the installed Norton 360. Desktop wouldn't change and had a blue bg with a spy-ware infection message, couldn't open task manager or use system restore, and had the standard zillion IE windows starting on their own. All that is now fixed with the scans and a few other fixes but I still have concerns and would sure appreciate some expert help.

Hi there and sorry for the delay. First we will secure your system then start cleaning

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

TO BEGIN

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

FINALLY FOR NOW

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

OK if this does not kill it I will need to get my big hammer out :)

You will loose your desktop for the duration of this fix

Start OTScanit. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

[Kill Explorer]
[Unregister Dlls]
[Processes - Non-Microsoft Only]
YY -> bwgo00018c4d.exe -> %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temp\bwgo00018c4d.exe
[Files/Folders - Created Within 90 days]
NY -> kss.sys -> %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\kss.sys
NY -> winstart.bat -> %SystemRoot%\winstart.bat
[Files/Folders - Modified Within 90 days]
NY -> kss.sys -> %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\kss.sys
NY -> winstart.bat -> %SystemRoot%\winstart.bat
NY -> bwgo00018c4d.exe -> C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Local Settings\Temp\bwgo00018c4d.exe
[Empty Temp Folders]
[Start Explorer]

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here along with a new Hijackthis log.

I will review the information when it comes back in.

Also let me know of any problems you encountered performing the steps above or any continuing problems you are still having with the computer.

This is my daughters computer who just got home from Iraq (Marine) and her roomate had it in this condition so I really don't know how good it ran. As of right now it seems decent for what it is and functioning correctly. I just really need an expert to help me as you have to make sure it's clean and ready to rock.

I have it set up in another room and am posting all this on my computer.

Thanks

Robert

Looks real good now - just one final scan to clear the registry

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.
