I was hit somehow with the Smitfraud virus going around and seems to be spreading like crazy. I got rid of the windows message and the blue on my desktop. Problem now is when I right click the desktop, then click properties, the only tabs I get are screensver and settings. The rest won't come up. I have run the following programs to try and get rid of this mess:

Ad Aware
My own Norton anti virus
AVG anti virus
spybot
spyware blaster
TDS-3
Panda active scan

They found a few problems and fixed them, but the desktop remains the same(just black background) . I deleted the wp.exe file that I used the search(on windows XP) to locate and isolate. It is still in my recycle bin. I have downloaded Hijackthis and ran it, but I'm far from an expert (or even a novice for that matter) to do anything with it. Is there any hope for my desktop? :tazz:

Thanks

You may need to be in Safe Mode to find it or use My Computer/Windows Explorer and activate "Show Hidden/System Files" Show Hidden and System files:
http://service1.syma...x&osv=&osv_lvl=

Please follow the instructions below if you wish to remove the offending objects from your machine

The first step to clean your machine, it is highly recommended that you clean the following directory contents (but not the directory folder):
* C:\Windows\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <=This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested. In Windows 98*admin you can also go to IE, Tools, Internet Options, Temproary Internet Files section, Delete Files and check Off Line Content
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

You may want to use CCleaner found here www.ccleaner.com

Well, I've been playing around . I now have a desktop once again. I went into control panel and opened display. There were all the old tabs that were there before smitfraud got me. I reset my desktop from there and all is back to normal except the browse feature doesn't work. I guess you can't have everything. All help is and was appreciated. If something on the hijack this needs fixing please let me know.

Thank you again

Hi al, there was a helper (nommork) helping you here already. I think we should stick with only one helper per thread here so I really shouldn't be posting here. Once you get a helper, he/she should keep track of this topic for your reply. The helper should get back to you also if they see your reply.

Since you PMed me, I guess I might as well reply.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key until menu shows up. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Uninstall SideStep from the Add/Remove panel if it's listed.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O1 - Hosts: 64.91.255.87 www.dcsresearch.com
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D714A94F-123A-45CC-8F03-040BCAF82AD6} - C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\SbCIe028.dll

Do you know what the following program(s) are for? If not, fix it in HijackThis:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ConfidenceLite] C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\WholeSecurity\CAT\ConfidenceLite.exe

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\WholeSecurity\ - only delete if you fixed it (see above)
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\SbCIe028.dll

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

greyknight 17- I apologize if I broke any protocols by contacting you in advance. I am appreciative of any and all help given by you and nommork. I just hope I didn't step on any toes or start any bad blood between you two.

That's ok. It's just that I'm "new" (if you can call it that) here and don't want to step on anyone's toe here either.

OK, let's wrap this up:

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
