Unchangeable desktop background with periodic shady system tray alerts

I'm using Windows XP Professional. My desktop background suddenly changed to a light blue color with yellow and white text saying that my PC has several fatal errors and that I should scan for spyware immediately. I try to change the background back in the CtrlPanel, but the box with the different pics is greyed out. Plus, there's periodically an alert (! in a yellow triangle) that pops up in the system tray telling me that my PC is unsafe. This spyware can also make a clone of the Windows Security interface.

Sorry, I haven't followed the directions exactly. I started out trying to download every program I could think of (Ad-Aware, SuperAnti, etc.). I've also tried smitfraudfix with no luck. I read the boards directions - the thing is, I already have SP2 installed as well.

Other quirky things also happen like 1) IE not going to the page it's supposed to (e.g., I click on a link for ESPN, IE directs me to Yahoo Hotjobs), 2) after I log in to Windows, the first thing that loads is a little box that says something like Setting Personal Settings for C:\RECYCLERS, and 3) some websites are reachable, while some are blocked entirely, including this site (so you guys must be good!). and of course, there are the usual pop-ups.

Here is my HJT list. I tried to update that uninstall list too, but the program doesn't do anything after I click save list. I also included the rapport file after my failed attempt with smitfraudfix. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
Welcome to the site

I will be handling your log to help you get cleaned up. As it has been a few days, can you please rescan with Hijack This and post a fresh Log. This is because your computers condidtion may have changed.

I want you to show hidden files. There are instructions HERE to help you do this.
You should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Some of the instructions I give may need to be printed or saved for reference during the fix. Some of the fix will be done in Safe Mode so you will be unable to access this thread at that time.
Please dont use any of the tools without specific instructions. Some of them are dangerous (and could leave your computer in worse condition that it is when infected) if used incorrectly.
These instructions should be read first, then followed. If you do not understand something, don't be afraid to ask, or see if I'm on chat. :)

Hi Sarahw,

Here's my updated Hijackthis log after I unchecked hide files. I have another computer so I'll be reading instructions from there.

Thanks for your help, Sarahw! I was 1 day away from reformatting my computer.

Hi,
Download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

I double click combofix on my desktop, but nothing happens :)
Hijackthis also crashes now whenever I try to save a log.
Doing all of this in normal mode.

I had to download it from my other comp and transfer it over via flash drive. The spyware is somehow blocking my downloads from Firefox and IE.

Ok,
Try not to reboot/restart you computer.
Can you please click on Hijack This and change its name to HJT.

We need to backup the registry before we continue.
Registry edits can be potentially dangerous; we can revert to the backup if needed.
Go to Start » Run » type: regedit » OK.
  • On the leftside, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
  • Go up to File » Export
    • Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
      Under "Filename" put RegBackup.
  • Choose to save it to C:\
  • Click save and then go to File » Exit.
When you have done this, continue to the next step.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

I'm running SDFix right now. It says:

"Cannot load VDM IPX/SPX support"

is that an issue?

Hi,
If you can't run SDfix, we can try something else.
Make sure that you have definatly backed up your registery as per the previous instructions before you continue:

1.
Launch Notepad, and copy/paste everything in the codebox below into the new document, including the word REGEDIT4. Go up to "File Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop as fixme.reg

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Userinit"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\userinit.exe,"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"jfproc"
"{81-13-37-7C-DW}"
"dbar_starter"
"ExploreUpdSched"
"{5fcde9b8-b37b-d419-53b5-b90c902d4496}"
"BMa39b204f"
"a0a813d3"
"WinUpdater"
"WebSUpdater"

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop. It should look like this --> Posted Image
Double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?" Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

2.
Open notepad again. Copy and paste the following.

@ECHO off
sc stop P4P Service
sc stop Windows Action Script
sc delete P4P Service
sc delete Windows Action Script
exit

In Notepad click on the "File" menu > Save As... Under "File name" type fix.bat and Change "Save as type" to All Files, save it to your desktop.
Posted Image

3.
Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xwusuhzh.exe
    C:\Program Files\ppfilm
    C:\windows\system32\rwwnw64d.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\William Li\Application Data\Deskbar_{542707AA-DE31-4eb9-9049-0B03B60B498E}\starter.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ncnttkdm.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pavfgxpq.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\fbukwslp.dll
    C:\Program Files\winvi\update.exe
    C:\Program Files\winvi\wupda.exe
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Hi Sarahw,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to help me, but I went ahead and just reformatted my computer. You can go ahead and close this topic now.

I'll be sure to come back to this site if I ever have any issues again.

Thanks again.
