Welcome to GTG.

Is your background wallpaper ok?

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key until menu shows up. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click 'Kill process' for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check):

C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe
C:\spywarebegone\SpywareBeGone.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Spyware Begone
Security iGuard
Ebates

WeatherBug - it's adware. If you didn't install this yourself, uninstall it. If you did install it yourself, you may keep it and ignore any fixes/deletions listed below.

WildTangent - This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all. They collect information about you and your usage. We recommend uninstalling it.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\Program Files\AWS\ - only if you uninstalled WeatherBug
C:\Program Files\WildTangent\
C:\Program Files\Security iGuard\
C:\spywarebegone\
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

I'm sorry to say this, but yes, you have to remove it. These *fake* anti-spyware companies are taking advantage of a lot of users who don't know what they are buying. Here's a quote on what Spyware Begone is:

aggressive advertising (1); false positives work as goad to purchase; free scanner uses out of date ref database; same company as Spyware Vanisher [A: 6-26-04 / U: 11-10-04]

So basically, it's a fake and does more harm.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

What do you mean your browser doesn't work? Do you get any error messages?

OK, let's try this.

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it run and see if it finds any missing/corrupted files. If not, it should close by itself.

Let's try registering Internet Explorer's DLL files. Go to Start->Run and copy and paste the following into the Run box and hit OK (go to Start->Run again for each one):

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

See if those two things will solve the problem.

Also, if you have a router or firewall program, make sure those are not causing the browsing problem. If anything, try resetting your router if you use one.

See if this site can repair IE. Go with option #2 since we did #1 already.

How did you fix the Desktop problem? It's usually more complicated than a simple fix.

i cant do that because my search browser does not work properly....it seems as if the whole "search folder" is empty.....like the left side of the window which normally has the options is just a blank blue screen with the "searc dog" at the bottom

i fixed throught a link through your website but i couldnt find the forum from where i got it...i had to run a program called regredit or something like that...i had to change the "1" to "0" to make the statement false again...so hopefully that helps

OK, just set the settings accordingly but don't do the search. Make sure to make the hidden files visible (or whatever it says to do on the site). Then go to c:\windows\inf\ and right click on ie.inf and choose Install.

Restart and see if Internet Explorer works now.

If that still doesn't fix it, then do this:

Right click on http://www.greyknigh...pairDesktop.reg and download that file. Double click on it and click on Yes when it asks you if you want to merge it into the registry. Once that's done, restart your computer.

Login as usual and now right click on your Desktop and go to Properties. Next go to Desktop tab->Customize Desktop button->Web tab. Uncheck everything listed there. Then delete all the entries listed except for 'My Current Home Page'. Click OK and OK.
