Drive does not recognize black cd nor with it play DVD

When trying to burn a cd-r the drive does not recognize that there is a blank cd in drive nor will the drive play a DVD. But drive will burn a cd-r using Nero and it will burn a DVD using pinnicle. The cr drive will also play music and rip to media play but will not durn from medica player. Using XP.
