Laptop to external monitor display settings

oright guys, my laptop's lcd is failing,
so i bought this 19" lcd from samsung
and i got it all connected. Good.
But one thing i dont like is that the screen that appears on my Lcd screen is STRETCHED.
What do i do to correct this problem??
I mean i want a screen that doesnt look stretched.
Or NORMAL in simple terms.
Please help. I hate seeing STRETCHED ICONS, STRETCHED EVERYTHING!!!!
ITS killing me!!!!!
Ive tried varying the system display configurations, but nothing seems to work!!!!
