Hi, I got my PC infected by a MW called SHeur according the AVG 8.0 . The MW was put in the virus vault, but running HijackThis I still find a suspected bug or malfunction. "Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nwprovau.dll ". I was instructed to run LSPfix tu take care of the problem, but the result was "NO PROBLEM FOUND". Here following I will append the last HJThis logfile I got.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.

• Close all other windows before proceeding.
• Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
• When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

I'll do what you asked me to do, but please let me also update you on what I did in the past days:
a) run SpyBot S&D to clean a dozen of ads .. 3 days ago
b) scan with PANDA TotalScan 2 days ago (result in a file attachment)
c) scan with KASPERSKY Online scan this morning (result in attached file)
Now here following the reports you were asking me : MAIN report and EXTRA report.

OK thanks for that it has shown me a few nasties that need to be removed. But first I will secure your system

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

THEN

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.

• Save it to your desktop.
• Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
• Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

• Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
• Click the red Moveit! button.
• Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
• Close OTMoveIt2

If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

• Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
• Close any open browsers.
• Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Hello Essexboy, hare I am, back to reality and ... Murphy's law ...
I'm writing this fast reply from my wife's PC, since my one seems to be blocked under COMBOFIX.
It has a blue screen with 3 lines as follow:
Preparing report
Do Not use any pgm till Combofix will have finished
Access denied

The cursor is blinking since about 15 minutes ... I suspect one possible cause: I do not know anything on how Combofix prepares the report, but if it uses HijackThis and is expecting to have it under a certain path, he may not be finding it.
I have it under a different directory . Could this cause the "Access denied" ? What should I do now ?

I checked into the Combofix folder: it has a kind of report I will append below, together with the OTmoveIt2 log and a HiJackThis log I will create.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

THEN

• Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
• Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

• Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

• Close OTMoveIt2

FINALLY FOR NOW

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.

• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
  (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
• Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hello Doc,
believe it or not, this PC was used only to make the tests you were requesting, nothing more. It has been shut down all Saturday and almost Sunday; running then the couple of programs (OTmoveIt and Combofix), therefore I can not think how it may have got a new infection.
AVG was running all time with the exception of Combofix. Anyhow here we go with the OTmove log + other stuff:

That looks better now. All that remains is a sweep for registry orphans and a final check

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

Double click OTMoveIt2 once again and you should see a CleanUp! button, press that button, you may get prompted by your firewall that OTMoveIt2 wants to contact the internet, allow this, a cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will delete all the tools you have downloaded plus itself

Now to get you off to a good start we will re-set your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your your restore point but this is my method:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
2. On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
3. Click NEXT
4. Enter a name e.g. Clean
5. Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
3. Click OK
4. The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
5. Select the More Options Tab.
6. At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
7. Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done



Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free program:

• SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
• SuperAntispyware Run weekly to keep your system clean

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

Good, All done !!!
Just a couple of little remarks : the Cleanup process done by OTMoveIt2 left a program (MalwareByte) on the system.
I had it removed manually by Selecting START, Add or Remove Programs, Selecting "MalwareByte" and then clicking REMOVE.
I also have seen you recommending to protect my computer with the following free program:
- SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
- SuperAntispyware Run weekly to keep the system clean.
I already have AVG8 free edition and SpyBot Search & Destroy installed : do you think I may have conflict?.. or can I proceed smoothly?
