Hi, thanks for your help in advance. Along with my long list of problems, it's getting harder and harder to run trendmicro on my system; the IE browser keeps closing. I did have trouble using Spybot and Adaware but after I changed the application names to something random, they ran okay. My Norton Antivirus does not open up at all. Here is my log from Hijack This. I can also include a log of my adaware findings if needed. Thanks again. Larry Kao

Welcome to GTG.

The version of HijackThis you have there is too outdated. Get the newer version here and run a new scan. Post that new log here.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download AboutBuster http://www.greyknigh...AboutBuster.zip and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Update and then Check For Update to see if there are any updates. Close the program now.

Download LSPFix http://www.greyknigh.../spy/LSPFix.exe and run it. Click on flsmngr.dll on the left window and click on the arrow pointing to the right. Click Finish and follow the prompts.

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key until menu shows up. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.
Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click 'Kill process' for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmdtel.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ahtun.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlki.exe
C:\windows\system32\taskmg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\apims.exe
C:\wp.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

WeatherBug - it's adware. If you didn't install this yourself, uninstall it. If you did install it yourself, you may keep it and ignore any fixes/deletions listed below.

WildTangent - This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all. They collect information about you and your usage. We recommend uninstalling it.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Do you know what the following program(s) are for? If not, fix it in HijackThis:

C:\Program Files\Aegon\Updater\Updater.exe

Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Start->OK and then follow the rest of the prompts to scan (choose Yes/OK for all). It will ask you if you want a second scan, choose Yes. Save the log file and post it here.

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\Program Files\Aegon\ - only delete if you fixed it (see above)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmdtel.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ahtun.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlki.exe
C:\windows\system32\taskmg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\apims.exe
C:\wp.exe
c:\wp.bmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xnzqb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\wingg.dll
C:\Program Files\WildTangent\
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
C:\Program Files\AWS\ - only if you uninstalled WeatherBug
c:\windows\system32\flsmngr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\apiot.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mm\

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Hi,

This application is something I installed myself from my work.
C:\Program Files\Aegon\Updater\Updater.exe
should be okay.

If you want me to delete it, clean up the entire system, and then reinstall this application, I can do that.

Also, when I make these updates and changes, should I shut down my Internet Connection or will that not make a real difference?

Thanks,

Larry Kao

You may keep that program since you know what it's for.

Usually you won't have any internet access in safe mode unless you have networking on. But in this case it shouldn't matter. Keep in mind though, that you should not have any browsers open.

Hello,

I followed everything you said, but I could not delete the Wildtangent program from the add/remove from the control panel; is there another way to delete the Wildtangent program? After doing everything else, the computer seems like nothing has changed in normal. The desktop is black with a message in the center stating something like: WARNING YOU'RE IN DANGER...Remove Spyware from your PC...Click on this link. Also, a lot of the files that looked exactly like the ones that I was supposed to delete but had "oqo25" instead of "xuzqb," I just wanted to make sure that they were not the same thing. Thanks for the help and here's the final log from HijackThis:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Do the same thing for Loading Outpost Connections (KDE) and Debug oupost relations (LAGOS).

Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click 'Kill process' for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check):

C:\WINDOWS\mfccq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcpg.exe

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Hey Greyknight,

When I was trying to follow your instructions again, I ran into a problem. When you asked me to look for the programs, many of the names were the same except for one group of five letters. Example:

You would tell me to get rid of:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\oqozs.dll/sp.html#44768

My list had:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\fgcnr.dll/sp.html#44768

the problem is that: oqozs vs. fgcnr; I was just wondering if they were the same thing or if they were different.

Thank you,
Kaostv

Hi Kaostv, yes they may change filenames especially if you restarted. AboutBuster should delete those group of similar filenames nevertheless. I just want you to double check and make sure they're deleted already. So yes, fix those if they changed names.

Restart. Post back a new HijackThis and AboutBuster log when done.

Hi Greyknight17,

Thanks for all your help. For the most part, the system seems to be working a lot better already. However, I still have two problems I can see immediately:

1. The black desktop wallpaper that reads "WARNING! YOU'RE IN DANGER! ETC." still exists.

2. My Norton Antivirus still doesn't open up.

AIM works now and it previously did not. Also, IE goes straight to my default website "Google" so that is also fixed.

Here is the most recent postings.

Just a note here. Next time if you post a log, make sure that word wrap is disabled in Notepad. As you can see above, the formatting it creates is not easy to read. That's ok this time, since I looked through it already just now and you're clean.

No problem, we'll fix that desktop problem up now.

Right click on http://www.greyknigh...pairDesktop.reg and download that file. Double click on it and click on Yes when it asks you if you want to merge it into the registry. Once that's done, restart your computer.

Login as usual and now right click on your Desktop and go to Properties. Next go to Desktop tab->Customize Desktop button->Web tab. Uncheck everything listed there. Then delete all the entries listed except for 'My Current Home Page'. Click OK and OK.

That should do it.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Hi Greyknight,

Thanks for all your help, it has been tremendous thus far. I still have a few questions left.

1. My Norton Antivirus still doesn't open up.

2. Windows Update webpage didn't load correctly. Is that something wrong with my system? I think I'll wait a day and see if I can update then.

However, I think my Norton Antivirus should work. Should I uninstall and reinstall?

Thanks,

Larry Kao

Hi Larry, yes. Uninstall and reinstall Norton. See if it will work then. Before installing it, make sure you delete all the folders for Norton or Symantec under C:\program files\ if it's still listed there.

What problems are you having with the Windows Update page? Any errors?

Hi, when I try to do the windows update, I get this message after going to the link you gave me.

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem:
For self-help options:

Windows Update Response Center

Windows Update Troubleshooter

Windows Update Newsgroups
For assisted support options:

Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows Update issues)

Issue 2, my Norton Antivirus has been giving me trouble. I uninstalled and it still would not open correctly. I will try to uninstall and reinstall.

Issue 3, when I start up my computer, it automatically opens up IE. Is there a setting where I can disable this?

Thanks for your continued help,

Larry Kao
