My .02:

The one thing I didn't like is the not being allowed to do photo manipulations for the contest. I don't know if that was a rule that you guys made up, or if it came from the higher-ups (HP), but I see no real reason not to allow them. A good majority of the time, it would take more effort to do a photo manipulation in Photoshop than to print a logo and snap a picture. Also, I kind of agree that it being chosen at random was kind of different. Someone could have put a great deal of time into thinking of/implementing their idea, only to have the prize go to someone who set the logo as their desktop wallpaper and snap a quick photo win it.

That being said, it's nice to try and win free things, so I'm all for continuing the contests.

We had no rules from HP or BuzzCorp, it was our contest to run as we saw fit. There were two major reasons we chose not to allow photo manipulation. First, was the copyright issue. Chances are somebody would submit a copyrighted photo that has been altered. We wouldn't have permission to use that photo, and that's a problem. Second, it would exclude those that don't have expensive tools like Photoshop. We wanted to make this contest available to a large percentage of members and visitors. There were a couple of other reasons, but I won't go into all if them in public. HP also makes digital cameras, and printers. I think the contest was appropriate.

Speaking to other site owners, the ones that had the most objections were the ones that didn't award the prize randomly. Someone is always going to be unhappy with the decision.
