while browsing the internet, running a torrent application , and other things, my desktop suddenly hangs.

i can't see the taskbar. when i minimize the windows the taskbar buttons minimize but it floats at the bottom of the screen since there is no taskbar.

when i press alt+tab i can switch from program to program.

i can also access task manager and can only shutdown from there.

i have windows xp service pack 3 already. before service pack 3 there's no problem

Try your computer on Safe Mode
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
