Just curious, what software tools do you see as essentials to having in doing your jobs? Which ones do you use? I appreciate all recommendations. I know it depends on what one is trying to achieve. I am just looking for the best ones.

My favorite from the Matrix, Nmap. Command line and various front ends depending on platform.
How about Nessus for vulnerability scanning.
Ethereal which is now Wireshark protocol mapping.
Snort for intrusion detection.
