Hey folks,
In advance I’m hugely appreciative of any help you can offer. :)

I seem to have a similar problem to Yasmin (posted Apr 8th)
When I first open the Internet explorer, and occasionally thereafter, extra windows pop up accessing other sites (www.oldgames.nu, www.adultfinder.com). I have Norton security bundle and this mostly blocks them but it’s driving me crazy. ;)

More worryingly, some sites are very inappropriate for younger users of this machine.
I’ve taken this as far as my limited knowledge will allow. ;)

Really hoping you can help. Also, great site! :tazz:
Thanks........

Here’s my hijack log:

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://awbeta.net-nucleus.com (HKLM)

O16 - DPF: {24311111-1111-1121-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\eied_s7.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193457} - file://c:\wx.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193458} - file://c:\ex.cab
O16 - DPF: {43331111-1111-1111-1111-611111195622} - file://c:\ex.cab

O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34545} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll

Close HiJackThis.

Please reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Using Windows Explorer, delete this file if found (it's a trojan):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll

Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log.

All's good, at least with the PC!
Once again, very many thanks for restoring my faith in those who know far more than I ever will about PCs.

Best regards. :tazz:

One more thing to do. Open HiJackThis. Click on "none of the above just start the program", click on "Config", then click on "Backups", then click "Delete All"

And that's it! you're good to go!

You're very welcome! ;)

Congratulations your log is clean! Great job on the clean up :tazz:

I recommend checking the http://www.microsoft.com website periodically for critical updates to install.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Ewido Security Suite <= Protection against Trojans, Worms, Dialers, Hijackers, Spyware, and Keyloggers.

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
