And a few questions:

it says device manager disabled (?)
and why are there an additional administrator and guest account (?) It's supposed to be only one user (my name, and I'm administrator on this computer, nobody else is using it) - it's not something I can find under user accounts...

The 'my computer' window still pops up when I reboot the computer

When I open "help" and i want to check the index, it's not available, all i see is an x (like when you can't see a picture)

And there is still a program goint online before even the whole desktop is uploaded. I would like to find out which one and how to stop this...

Also, when I open a new browser tab (it doesn't matter if explorer or firefox, it always gives me a blanc window - how can i change that?

To your question: The program works now (from my work).

Let me know what you think,

thanks for everything!

I'll address you questions later. Right now, let's focus on getting your system cleaned up. :)

Let's do one final check to make sure we didn't any.

Next,

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    Posted Image

Then,

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Hey there, I deleted ComboFix, but when I go to the panda website and click on scan nothing is happening.... since I initially tried to work with this program (as named in the topic), I suspected that there might be fragments of this on my computer - after I searched, I found among docs, the one below in a notepad:

The software for Panda Anti-Virus is not compatible with this version of Microsoft Windows and will be disabled during the upgrade.

For more information about this software, or to obtain a version that runs on this version of Microsoft Windows, visit the manufacturer's Web site.

For a list of software supported by this version of Microsoft Windows, see the Microsoft Windows XP Compatibility List at http://www.microsoft...;sba=compatible.

I also found Panda Scan under C: programs (but it's not doing anything) and in the folders: C:\I386\COMPDATA and under Documents and settings - the spooky thing is that I can't delete these!!!!

What should I do now?

Thanks...

Well, you can delete Panda folder found on C:\Programs files but leave the others alone.

Since it already looks like it doesn't work with your system. Let use a different one.

But first,

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Then

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hey there, thanks for the fast reply, I have one question though - Kaspersky - I heard only really bad things about this program, such as messing up exsisting programs, deleting wrong files, refusing access, ect... I guess just scanning is ok, my question is, will it modify or delete things, settings, ect or just scan?

Nope, this will only detect malware (if any) present on your system.
The deleting will be left to me.

How's your computer running??

About your query earlier...

it says device manager disabled (?)

Where does it say that "device manager disabled"? Are yo referring to a particular device?

To view Device Manger,

  • Rightclick on MyComputer, then select Properties.
  • In the properties screen, click on the Hardware tab then Device Manager.

and why are there an additional administrator and guest account (?) It's supposed to be only one user (my name, and I'm administrator on this computer, nobody else is using it) - it's not something I can find under user accounts...

Nothing to worry about these two. They are built-in accounts that came with Windows during installation. I suggest leaving the Administrator account alone. The guest account you can disable.

To disable guest account.

  • Go to Control Panel >> User account
  • Click on Guest then "Turn off guest account".
  • Close window.

The 'my computer' window still pops up when I reboot the computer

Try this,

  • Go to Control Panel >> Folder Options >> View tab
  • Uncheck "Restore previous folder windows at logon"
  • Click Apply then Ok.

When I open "help" and i want to check the index, it's not available, all i see is an x (like when you can't see a picture)

Try this.

  • Click Start >> Run >> type "services.msc" then press Enter. A new window will open named "Services".
  • Locate doubleclick on "Help and Support".
  • Find Start up type:, Using dropdown menu, select "Automatic".
  • Apply the changes then press Start.
  • Click Ok to close.

And there is still a program goint online before even the whole desktop is uploaded. I would like to find out which one and how to stop this...

There are a few actually, some are needed by Windows to load.
What I can do is remove the ones not required during startup. Would like me to do this after you're all clean?

Also, when I open a new browser tab (it doesn't matter if explorer or firefox, it always gives me a blanc window - how can i change that?

For Firefox,

You can download, Tabbrowser Preferences 1.3.1.1 by Bradley Chapman

  • Install then restart Firefox
  • Next, go to Tools >> Options >> then Tabbed Browsing
  • Under Tabbed browsing, click on "User Interface" then locate "New tab button".
  • Click on drop-down menu to set what page with be loaded when new tab is opened.

For IE.

  • Go to Control Panel then locate Internet options
  • Under General tab, navigate to Tabs panel then click on settings.
  • Check on "Open home page for new tabs instead of a blank page".
  • Click on Ok.

Hope these help.
Let me know how it turns out.

How's your computer running??

MYSTERYMASTER It's running a bit faster, thanks, but the issues why I initially contacted you, remain the same, see below my answers in bold:
About your query earlier...

it says device manager disabled (?)

Where does it say that "device manager disabled"? Are yo referring to a particular device?

MYSTERYMASTER It said it in one of the scans...

To view Device Manger,

  • Rightclick on MyComputer, then select Properties.
  • In the properties screen, click on the Hardware tab then Device Manager.

To disable guest account.

  • Go to Control Panel >> User account

  • Close window.

MYSTERYMASTER This is not the issue, that's the first thing I did, I checked it there, there is NOT a second admin account and the guest user account is turned off, so this comes from somewhere else - one of the main reasons why I was worried...

The 'my computer' window still pops up when I reboot the computer

Try this,

  • Go to Control Panel >> Folder Options >> View tab
  • Uncheck "Restore previous folder windows at logon"
  • Click Apply then Ok.

MYSTERYMASTER This wasn't checked and it's still doing it....

When I open "help" and i want to check the index, it's not available, all i see is an x (like when you can't see a picture)

MYSTERYMASTER It was already set to automatic... doesn't change anything...

And there is still a program goint online before even the whole desktop is uploaded. I would like to find out which one and how to stop this...

There are a few actually, some are needed by Windows to load.

MYSTERYMASTER
This worked...

Hope these help.

MYSTERYMASTER Let me know what else I could try, thanks!

Note: This will increase system performance. Consequently, certain programs may not open as quickly as they once did due to the fact that they need time loading into memory.

yes, I guess that would be good, I just need to make sure it doesn't conflict with anything I need for work, that is absolutely crucial! I have a remote desktop for one job and I have another work connection for another job, anything related to that I'm not supposed to change, but I still need to know what to do about the issues I mentionend in BOLD, where ever it says MYSTERYMASTER, these worry me much more at the moment...

these worry me much more at the moment...

I wouldn't worry worry too much about these issues. The good news is you are cleared of malware.
With that said,

Congratulations, your log is clean.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then we'll move on some of the issues your are having.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]
System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Once your done with the Windows Update.
Please post back with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks :-)

There nothing really wrong with with device manager.

and why are there an additional administrator and guest account (?) It's supposed to be only one user (my name, and I'm administrator on this computer, nobody else is using it) - it's not something I can find under user accounts...

Like I said nothing to worry about these two. They are built-in accounts that came with Windows during installation.
I suggested disabling guest account cause you don't need it.

When I open "help" and i want to check the index, it's not available, all i see is an x (like when you can't see a picture)

There could be a number of reasons why it doesn't work. One of which is a faulty windows update that's why I asked you to Install SP3 first as this may resolve the issue.

The 'my computer' window still pops up when I reboot the computer

The culprit can be in your autostart.

This is where I have a problem - every time firefox wants to do an update it can't be installed (???)

You may be having problems with Firefox browser.

My Anti virus guard recognized it as a virus and it froze me firefox.

This is known to happen. AVs usually flags definitions from Panda.

Now let's see if we resolve some of the issues.

First, get your Windows XP updated.
Click here for a detailed instruction on how to get Windows SP3.

Next,

Back up you Firefox Bookmarks to your desktop.

then

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Firefox

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

c:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

Finally,

Download Mozilla Firefox then Install.

After installing, try Tabbrowser Preferences 1.3.1.1 by Bradley Chapman again and see if it works this time.

  • Install then restart Firefox
  • Next, go to Tools >> Options >> then Tabbed Browsing
  • Under Tabbed browsing, click on "User Interface" then locate "New tab button".
  • Click on drop-down menu to set what page with be loaded when new tab is opened.

Let me know how it went. :)
