Ugh. A couple years ago you guys helped me get rid of an annoying pop up adware. Well, got something else this time. I'm normally pretty good at keeping my system relatively clean, but something got in. I've ran AdAware, Spybot, and SuperAntiSpyware and all they found was cookies. I have Norton AV Corp version 10 running, it quaranteened adware.UCMore, which I had it delete. I couldn't run MBAM as I would get the windows security warning, then nothing. It wouldn't install.

My google search results get redirected to other, seemingly random, search pages, not necessarily related to the google search. I'm also having trouble getting to known good URLs, such as this site and Panda Software (I could not run that virus scan), getting page not found errors. I am posting this message from my laptop (using same gateway as main computer on the home network). The main computer with this problem is the fastest and has the most memory of any of my computers, but seems to run the slowest, so if you have any other suggestions about unnecessary software to get rid of, I'm all eyes/ears!

Here is my HiJackThis log, with uninstall list.

Hi shadow520 :)

The log is clean. What it could be is the hosts file redirecting Google to other websites, so let's take a deeper look at your system.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply. Note: It's likely that the two logs won't fit into one post. If so, please post extra.txt in a separate post.

The log looks clean... Let's see if replacing the hosts file helps.

Download the HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager.
  • Unzip HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
  • Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
  • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
  • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

I'll give that a try when I get home, but I think there are more serious issues involved here. I've got applications that won't run anymore (at all, don't know why), unexplained slow downs and delays, and other OS problems. I may end up reinstalling the OS and applications. I have backups of all data, so it's only a matter of the time involved to reinstall everything. I used to reinstall Windows about every two years anyway (to get rid of all the bloat over time), so I guess it's getting due. :)

Any recommended utilities to run to keep a fresh install clean/optimized, or anything to run before I resort to this measure given the circumstances noted?

Thanks!

Well, it's your choice. :) Unless there is something deeper here, I actually don't see any malware, or any bad file associations. If you choose to re-install the OS, it will probably solve these problems, unless they're related to hardware, which is not likely in this case.

As for your question, yes, here is a list of recommended programs :) Let me know what you decide.

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):
It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

As I suspected, the hosts file was already as default.

I get Norton AV Corp Edition through work, which is installed on all my computers. My wireless router has security and firewall enabled. I have used Adaware as my primary adware scanner, but didn't use any resident scanners other than what's included in Norton. I am pretty good at avoiding issues with email and rogue sites. You can see by my join date as the only time I've been "caught with my pants down" and gotten any malware.

Since there isn't any apparent malware causing my issues, it must be OS related. I can't imagine hardware is to blame as the issues are only specific programs and certain websites. I don't have a ton of software on my computer, but it's still a pain in the butt to reinstall everything. I even tried to re-run update installations on one of the applications that won't load and it wouldn't run either.

So it looks like thats the route I need to go. I could attempt to restore a backup, but I'm not certain how far back this issue goes. Restoring OS/programs piecemeal is a bigger pain and causes more problems that just formatting and starting over.

Thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Yes, I can see you're careful with malware - you also don't have any inactive malicious files like most people have. You can try using system restore. It can't hurt if you intend to re-install the OS anyway.

Good luck :)
