hi guys

am using Windows Vista Business x64 and have an Asus P5K motherboard

I built my computer last October, was working fine until february time, i would go Start>Shut Down and select shut down, the computer would turn off completely for about 5 seconds and then turn itself back on again, also on coming back on it would say: 1) CMOS date/time not set 2) overclocking failed! although the date and time were set correctly and i have never tried to overclock it.

After not being able to shut it down properly (i had to resort to holding the power button in POST mode and shut it down that way) i decided i would change the CMOS battery. This worked - problem sorted!

But however shut it down yesterday and woke up this morning to find it had been on all night! shut it down again just to make sure i didn't press the wrong button and low and behold its back to its usual ways!

Any help/input as to what this problem may be and why it re-occurs would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Ryan

This could be caused by a faulty or stuck power button. Or alternatively the computer is blue-screening on shutdown and thus forcing a restart.

An easy solution to stop it turning itself on is unplug it once it's turned off. If it turns itself back on then with no electricity, you have definitely got a problem :)

Howdy:

Boot into BIOS and make sure "Wake on LAN" is not enabled.

@Murray: have done that, and made sure that the mouse and keyboard cannot turn on the computer.

Check your "Power Options" in Control Panel. Are all those set correctly?

Also, go into Device Manager and make sure your NIC is not set to "Wake the Computer" in there.

How do you connect then?

Have you tried running a sfc /scannow to check for a file problem?

scan automatically closed on its own (after reaching 100%), take it that it didn't find anything wrong?

Right. So is that adaptor set to wake up the system?

What "button" are you referring to here?
