Hi,

My dad left his computer running ovenight, and it has been hacked. It says there is the worm.win32.netboster virus in there. This virus has stopped accessing anything on the computer. It keeps saying the administrator has blocked access to this. i cant even access the task manager as it has blocked the access to that. it has removed the programs from the start menu as well as my computer, control panel and pretty much everything else. It has changed the background on the desktop to a blue screen with the words you have a virus! I cant load mcafee, and i just dont know where to start. The only thing i can tell you about the system is that it is running xp home service pack 2. i cant get the details up from the pc as i cant access anything.
i would be very grateful for any help at all in sorting this mess out!
thanks in advance

Hello jaxinthebox

Welcome to G2Go. :)
=====================
* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Hijack This.
  • Click on I agree
  • Then Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

How do you mean the only way you can use it in Safe Mode?
Can you not see your desktop icons or it will not boot into normal mode?

This following program only runs in Safe Mode but you will need to reboot into normal mode for it to finish correctly.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt
========================
Then:
Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running Combofix >ComboFix Instructions
We now suggest that you install the Windows Recovery Console.
The Windows recovery console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished all of that, along with a new HijackThis log.

If this error message is displayed when running SDFix:

The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator.
Press any key to continue . . .

Please goto Start Menu > Run > then copy and paste the following line:

%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\swreg IMPORT %systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg

Press OK then run SDFix again

as i am in normal mode and not safe mode, when i click on the start menu there isnt the run on there. its taken most of the options away. i dont have the programs list, run, search, computer. all i have in the list from the start menu is set program access and defaults, and the connect to. other than that, nothing and so im unsure how to run it. also shall i re run it in safe mode so it can give me the log file? coz the file is not on the desktop now im in normal mode.

oki just started it in safe mode and did what u said nd it came up with a box that says:

C:\SDFix\apps refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a had drive on ts computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disc is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

im going to give up on it for tonight and go home to have some dinner, will check back in the morning. Thanks again for all your help, i very much appreciate it.

Do this boot into Safe Mode and double click on Hihjackthis to run it.
Click on Open the misc tools section.
Then click on Open Process Manager.
Now click on the button that says Run at the bottom.
Copy and paste %systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\swreg IMPORT %systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg it in there and hit Ok.
Then try to run SDfix again only in safe mode.

WHen the program finishes it will ask you to reboot.
Then you will need to boot into normal mode to let it finish running.
Follow those prompts and then a log will be produced.

Post that log then Move on to running Combofix.
