Yahoo messenger issues

I use yahoo messenger on a regular basis, yesterday I started having problems after downloading avast home edition, I'd switch to that from the professional. I'm not able to see what someone has said to me or what I've typed to them. I've tried uninstall and reinstall both programs and still I'm having the same problem.
