hi all.
i found your site via searching for how to remove a trojan horse.im pretty cluless when it comes to computers so if you can help be i'd be very gratefull.
Firstly i noticed a problem with my AOL,then the audio is funny when playing files as well as cd's,youtube video's etc.i ran avg and found 4 trojans the ran it again with system restore switched of and restart set to "safe".after a rescan avg says i have the all clear but the previous problems i had are still here.my pc is running slow,my AOL is slower and my audio is wrong.if i go into the main sound control section and move the WAV balance to the center the sound is muffled with hardly and vocals coming through on a song.If i move the WAV balance to the left or right the vocals come through but the bass dissappears.ive done a hijack this log,any help will be gratefully accepted.
thanks in advace,
pete.

Hello again kennyrodg,

I see you are running two anti-virus programs, AVG and Symantec.

Running two or more real-time anti-virus and firewall monitors at the same time can cause a conflict. That conflict could result in error messages, crashes of the programs or other types of failure. You will very likely end up with little or no protection.

You will have to make a choice as to which anti-virus program you wish to retain. I would retain AVG. Both are good anti-virus programs but Norton Symantec is a resource hog and tends to slow your computer down.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall. Then go here Norton Removal Tool to remove left over bits of the Norton AntiVirus Program. Choose the link for the version you had and then download and run the removal progam.

Next

Please download Ccleaner.

Double click and follow the prompts to install.

Before proceeding, ensure that in the Advanced Option section only Old Prefetch Data is checked . By default this is the case but check, just to make sure.

On the left side, click on the button Cleaner, then the buttons Analyze>Run Cleaner

-----Step 2-----

Kaspersky only works if you are using Internet Explorer.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.

Click on the Kaspersky Online Scanner button. A box will come up, click Accept, this will allow it to install an ActiveX component and download its latest anti-virus database. (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)

  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    * Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    * Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    * Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

No, F-Secure is fine. I take it you also uninstalled Norton Symantic and are only running one anti-virus now.

If you are interested in looking at comparatives you can go to the link below.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/

Just a note of caution though, I think av comparatives can sometimes be misleading. Results vary from month to month and some products seem to perform better in some areas. What you want is a sound anti-virus that performs well on a consistent basis.

Nothing found in the Kaspersky Scan. Lets make sure with a deeper look:

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

If the report it generates is a long one you may have to spread it over two posts. That's OK.

So when you return
  • post the DSS results
  • also please tell me how your computer is running now

hi again emeraldnzl.
ive got the reports,thanks.
unfortunately my problems with AOL and music playback are still with me.AOL is still very slow indeed and all music and audio inc CD playback is muffled.the best way i can describe it is like a phaser effect. With the WAVE balance set at the middle the midrange and trebble disappear all together.Set it to the left or right and the the midrange comes back but the bass is distorted.Apart from these two problems my computer seems to be running fine.
here's the reports and thanks again.I'll put the extra.txt in the next post.

Hello Kennyrodg,

Please don't play around with that file. It is an essential part of your system. Probably best to wait until I get back to you.

I know it's frustrating but worth it in the long run.

I haven't forgotten you. Just doing some research on your problem. I will get back. :)

Hello again Kennyrodg,

Well this is an interesting one. I have spent some time researching what might be causing your problem and haven't come up with anything definitive. There is nothing on the Malware side that I can see.

There is monitoring program there which while not exactly malicious is reporting back to Realtek. It would make sense to remove that and then it will be time for you to go to the Tech Guys who have the expertise to look for your problem.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Boot into Safe Mode:

1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):

ALCMTR.EXE

After that, Reboot.

When you have completed this task please post a new thread in Windows XP Tech forum. Explain your problem and tell them you were sent by me.

Nice doing business with you Kennyrodg. I hope your problem is cleared up soon. :)

Hi kennyrodge,

You can remove the tools we used now DSS, HijackThis and AFT.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

Ensure your hidden/system files and folders are reset . System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, we need to clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that you are clean here are some things I think are worth having a look at:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Check your Java; quite often people find there edition is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JDK) Update and save it to your desktop or the folder you usually download to.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop or Download folder.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop or Download folder double-click on the Java exe to install the newest version.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then. This helps with security and your computer will run more efficiently. I clean mine once a week. For ease of use, you might consider the following free program:Note: Unless you are an expert ensure that in the Advanced Option section only Old Prefetch Data is checked . By default this is the case but check, just to make sure. Also it is probably not necessary to run the registry clean option but if you do, ensure you click "yes" to the back up option, before cleaning.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A great way to check that your Microsoft and Java have the latest updates is to go to Software Inspector at Secunia.

I do this weekly. Not only do they tell you which programs need updating but they give you the link to follow.

To bolster your security go to Secunia.com to ensure essential programs are up to date.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To help protect your computer in the future here are some free programs you can look at:

  • SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users to detect and remove spyware.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here is a free one available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

If your Microsoft Update is not working automatically. Keep your operating system up to date by visiting monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
