Desktop switches from 32bit to 8bit after it starts up

My Dell Inspiron 5150 boots up in 32bit but before it is finished booting the screen goes black and it changes to 8bit. I have gone in to display settings and reset the display to 32bit and applied it. It stays in 32bit while I use the computer. When it is shut down and restarted it repeats the same thing over again....J.Ennis

Lets make a DxDiag report.
  • Go to Start and hit run.
  • In the box type: "dxdiag"
  • Let the loading bar in the bottom left finish.
  • After that use the save button in the bottom right.

Are you sure you aren't booting in safe mode?
Let's look at the boot.ini file.
  • Right click on My Computer and choose "Properties".
  • In the Properties window, click on the "Advanced" tab.
  • In the Startup and Recovery section, click on the "Settings" button.
  • In the window that opens, click on the "Edit" button...a notepad window will open (boot.ini)
  • copy the contents of that window and paste it here for me.

Your video drivers might be outdated, You might want to re-install those.
You can get them here.

I did as suggested. I installed drivers. Turned off computer. It came on with 32bit, went blank (black) came back on 8bit, went blank (black) tried to come back on but sputtered a couple times, went back to blank screen then returned on with 32bit.
I repeated shutting down again and it repeated the same behavior.........jennis70

How many video connectors do you have at the back of the computer? If you have two, go to Control Panel > System > hardware > device manager. click the (+) sign of Display Adapters. Right click one of them and choose Disable. Reboot. If the computer boots well then leave it as it is. If it boots to 8 bit repeat the procedure, enable the disabled driver and disable the second one.

I only have one, an s/video (connecter) adapter. At least that's what I think it is called......jennis70

What i see now is that your computer is a laptop, not a desktop, contrary to title of the topic. Am I right? If yes, then what I wrote in my previous post is not applying in this case.

Let's try to reset the BIOS. What I am going to suggest works for HP/compac computers. I hopre it will work with Dell.

Disconnect the battery charger. Remove the laptop's battery. Press the power button for about a minute. Reinstall and let us know what happens.

I proceeded as suggested. When I rebooted my laptop responded identically as before. I feel as though I have skimped on giving you all the information about it's behavior. Not intentionally but unknowingly. When my computer started changing from 32bit to 8bit and sometimes returning to 32bit on startup I didn't mention that it takes me two rounds of going to the start menu, left clicking on turn off computer and finally left clicking on turn off computer in pop up box. It is not shutting off on the first time through. Today, right after trying out your idea I didn't wait to see if it would turn itself back to 32bit after it switched to 8bit I decided to turn off the computer using method described above. Upon left clicking turn off computer button in start up box I noticed my computer went nearly black. The pop up box came on and I left clicked the turn off computer and my desktop returned in 32bit. Also today I noticed that in the bar at the bottom of the desktop, right side, when startup is completed, my netgear wireless icon was not there. I went into start up and all programs to get netgear smart wizard because a connection to the internet wasn't taking place. When I opened the smart wizard desktop switched back to 8bit.......it is like I have two desktops running at the same time. Can that happen?......Thank You...jennis70

Boot the computer. In Control Panel click System > Advanced > startup and recovery > Edit. A notepad file will open up. Copy it and paste in your next reply. Be careful not to change anything in the file.
