You can have XP PRO installed parallel to home edition. You will have to reinstall your applications and move your data to the new installation, using windows explorer. After that you can delete home edition and modify BOOT.INI.

Sounds complicated and non-beneficial? I think you are right. I never do that. I take the longer root, back up the data, clear format and install the desired XP version. Like with almost any other subject you will hear different opinions.
