Windows XP MCE freezes at loading screen

Hi

I was wondering if you could help me with the following problem

When starting up my computer I get to the windows loading screen, however, it takes an absolute eternity to get to the next screen which just ends up to be a black screen. At this point the computer is stuck as nothing else happens.

have you tried booting into safe mode...
did you add any new hardware or software recently..
did you get any updates for windows or any other program just before this started...
