Please help me in checking my computer to see if I have any viruses or spyware. When online I continuously get pop-ups.

Also I am very illiterate on what my computer needs for protection, firewall & anti-virus. Could you also please help me in checking to see if I currently have these on my computer and let me know if there are better ones I should be using.
