Machine was really bad, but I was able to follow along with some of the threads here that seemed similar to some of the problems I had, and it has gotten much better, but still have some problems. HJT log follow, with Kaspersky log below that. Thanks.

Hello solley and Welcome to Geeks to Go!

Sorry for the delay, it has been a busy week. :)

Looks like you have malware on your system. Please read this post completely before proceeding with the fix. If you have question, don't hesitate to ask. :)

Let's start.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Appreciate your help. By the way, I posted in the waiting room...guess you can delete that now. Below are log.txt from ComboFix (rather than Combofix.txt noted in your instructions) and a new HJT log.

Looks like there is a new version of Kaspersky (7.0), so your instructions were a little off, but I think I got it right.

We're nearly there.

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\\QuickenScheduledUpdates]

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\iijwrg.dll
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

File is below. When I try to run windows update from the taskbar, it acts like it's going to run, but then says Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 could not be installed. Might be a coincidence, but thought you might know how to fix that too.

< [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] >
File/Folder [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] not found.
File/Folder "QuickenScheduledUpdates"=- not found.
File/Folder not found.
DllUnregisterServer procedure not found in C:\WINDOWS\system32\iijwrg.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iijwrg.dll NOT unregistered.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iijwrg.dll moved successfully.

  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Then,

File is below. When I try to run windows update from the taskbar, it acts like it's going to run, but then says Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 could not be installed. Might be a coincidence, but thought you might know how to fix that too.

Let's update windows via Microsoft Web site and see if that'll resolve the issue.

Click here for instructions on how to update to Windows XP SP3

After update, please post back with a new HijackThis log.

Log below. Installed SP3. Still can't install updates, though now there are more in the list of things not installed.

I'll see what I can come up with, what was the error message?

Better yet,

Click on Start, click on Run
copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
This will open up DSS configuration
click on Check All then Uncheck All
Place a check on "File Associations" and "Event Logs"
click Scan
DSS will now run again when finished
Please post back logs that open in notepad.

Ok, let's fix your file assocaitions first.

Click on Start, click on Run
copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /DAFT
Click on the Scan button.
Select everything it is displaying there.
Click the Fix button.
Then rescan with DAFT again - it should say now that "All associations are OK"
Close DAFT if you receive that message.

Next,

Open Notepad.
Copy and paste text in codebox below
Type filename as look.bat then Set Filetype to "all files"
Save to your Desktop then click Save.

dir c:\windows\system32\Msiexec.exe >> files.txt
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer" /v "ImagePath" >> files.txt & notepad files.txt

Double-click on look.bat to run.
Notepad will open with the results.
Post back with complete contents.

Finally,

Locate the installation error code during update.
  • Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
  • On the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site, click Review your update history. A window opens that shows all the updates that have been installed or that have failed to install on the computer.
  • In the Status column of this window, locate the update that failed to install, and then click the red X. A new window opens that displays the installation error code.
  • Post back the date and error number for these updates.

Using look.bat made my system puke. Got an error, titled "Windows - No Disk". The error said, "Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c". Options were Cancel, Try Again, or Continue. Try Again and Continue just made the error pop right back up. Cancel got me out of it and it said "The device is not ready."

I went to check my update history, but the latest (most recent date) is in May. I've attached a screenshot to make sure I'm not doing something wrong.

screenshot.jpg

The first on on that list (most recent, May 29) was Update for Windows XP (KB942763) and Error Code: 0x80242006

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2008 (KB890830) May 9 Error Code: 0x80246002
Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181) May 9 Error Code: 0x80246002
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2008 (KB890830) May 8 Error Code: 0x80246002

.....They're all the same error code. The dates are viewable in the attachment.
