alright, so I got my mobo bak from asus because I sent it in to get fixed. I got it bak and this time I used standoffs. everything worked fine. the pc started up so i connected my cd-rom, hdd, etc. the cd-rom gets recognized. when I put my master hdd wit the same ide cable as the cd-rom, it gets recognized. the hdd is old and has no jumper cables. when I put it in the hdd on the pri_raid1 or wutever it doesnt get recognized. but the pri-raid1 is on ide settings since It can be used as both. so I installed my new hdd which will become master, and this time, the old hdd gets recognized, but not my new one. its on the right jumper settings too. either way, when the computer starts, I get to bios and everythign. then a message comes up to start my pc in safe mode, safe mode wit networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known saved good, or start normally. i tried all of them and each time, my pc just goes back to the start up where I can again enter bios. it never proceeds to start windows itself. I have all my information on the older hdd and nothing happens.

okay, I just checked bios, and under boot then hard disk drives, they are both listed so they are recognized. the main problem now is that windows wont boot. those 5 options keep coming up and it keeps coming bak to the screen. i reseted cmos or whatever by removin the battery, switchin from 1/2 to 2/3 and bak to 1/2. nuttin. still windows wont boot. I cant even get a way to reinstall windows. by the way, I have a p5gdc (by asus) mobo and a 530j processor. it runs at 3ghz and has a fsb of 800mhz. the ram is 3200..i think but I got it from crucial. and I have a 500watt psu. helppp me......

Take the old hdd out for now, you can install that later and get your info.

Set the new hdd on ide 1 and the cdr on ide 2 both as master.

Go into bios, set the boot order to cd-rom 1 and hdd 2
Save and exit.

Now due a fresh install of windows, if your old hdd has a copy of windows on it from a different mobo then thats your problem or if windows was installed on the mobo you sent back it is messed up from all the problems.

After windows is running take out the cdr and install the old hdd on ide 2 and get your info. Iwould then get rid of that drive if it is that old and don't have jumpers.
instead of trying to make it work on the same ide channel as the new hdd and creating problems.
then reinstall the cdr back on ide 2 as master.

yea when I disconnect the old hdd, it asks for like a cd to install the os. so could I keep it as it is now and will the install work. my mobo only works for windows2000+ and I tried a windows98 and it said bad command or somethin after like a while. i lost my xp cd, so I will be getting a new one. so can I just use the new xp cd and install it witout any bad command problems? also, that old hdd is only 8gb and I dont really need anythin from it. so can I jus dump the whole thing and jus use hte fresh install and start fillin the new hdd from there?

yes, install to the new drive with the XP CD. make sure you get a full install disc, not an upgrade.
after installing, you can still hook up the old HDD as a slave and retrieve anything off it if you want, or just forget about it.
