If the mouse is old and been used a lot, switches do wear out to the point where even a single click to you produces a bounce resulting in multiple clicks you only see in the result of the action. Sometimes, you can adjust the click delay in the Mouse utility depending on whether it is supported or not. This probably is not going to cure the problem with an old mouse. If you have a new mouse, try it first to see if it clears up the problem under the same conditions.
