dd is a program:

dd - convert and copy a file

It is basically a low level copy tool which works well with devices.

The reason for the LiveCD is to boot the system to ensure that you get a clean copy of the OS installed. You don't want to copy it from a running (booted on the OS which you are trying to copy) system.

ghost4linux looks like it could work if you want to connect each machine to a network. Making a custom DVD would allow you to not have to connect the machine to anything else.
