Windows will not start

I noticed the screen was blank on my daughters' computer. After no response from pressing keys, I rebooted. A screen appeared with an apology that windws wouldn't start. I had the options of trying to start normally, with the last presets, or in safe mode. I have tried all of these only to result in a blank screen. What happened?
