Hello everyone!

My mother was using her computer when she called me to fix a problem she had. It appeared a demo version of WinAntiVirus Pro had installed itself on her computer and that it could not be removed by conventional means. I did a little research and knew right away it was a malware which invaded her computer. Sure enough, while browsing, a message showed up telling me my computer was unprotected and that errors were already occuring because of dangerous viruses. It was also telling me to buy WinAntiVirus Pro for 50 bucks so that my computer would be protected. I shut down the program using Ctrl-Alt-Delete and by terminating the winantiviruspro.exe process entirely, only then I was able to delete the file in the program files directory. I rebooted.

Unfortunately, a lot of other problems showed up and I started trying to solve them. First, the desktop turned to a plain color, I could see the original background appear at startup and at shutdown of the computer tough. However, before trying to solve this issue, I had to run a scan first. I used the latest version of Avast and AVG Free Edition 7.5. I removed any problematic file it found, but issues were still showing up.

I started to have a lot of trouble running Internet Explorer, it always shut down for absolutely no reason, up to a point where I took my own computer to search for solutions online. When I came back to try VundoFix on my mom's computer, I found out that .exe files could not be opened anymore, which kind of freaked me out. Thankfully, I found a very harsh solution on the web that required me to go and play into the registery, and it worked.

So now I tried VundoFix to no avail, because it found nothing. It was kind of dissappointing because I knew there were a lot of issues on this computer and I was also sure winantivirus pro was still there changing things in the background.

Even though I fixed the .exe problem, Internet Explorer was still not working properly and there was a novelty to it. Indeed, an error message telling me the program called "CTF Loader" had a problem and needed to shut down appeared every time Internet Explorer shut down. I still could not browse the internet properly, so I found a solution on my computer, again. I went into msconfig using start>run, unchecked the ctfmon program, rebooted, checked the ctfmon program, rebooted, and the issue was "gone". Meaning I never saw the message again. Well, I didn't let it anyway because I installed Firefox instead.

With a much more effective browser, I could now search for solutions on only one computer. Anyway, I now had to solve the desktop background problem, which wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. It's not even solved yet anyway... That's kind of why I'm here.

I found this topic, which is in fact the thing that brought me here: http://www.geekstogo...und-t99210.html

I applied exactly as it was outlined every single step the geekstogo expert told the guy with the exact same desktop background issue as mine, only with a few exceptions.

First off, Ewido seemed to not exist anymore, but the link brought me to the AVG website, so I downloaded the 30 day trial for the AVG anti-virus and anti-spyware program.

When I ran HijackThis in the safe mode, I fixed two files which had R3 before them, only to realize that I should not have done so because the expert told that to the guy because it was in his log, not in mine... But it was two nameless files, one with yahoo toolbar in its name and my mom does not even use it, so I hope it didn't do any harm.

When I arrived to the Run Ewido step, I ran AVG 8.0 trial edition only to find that it could only start in a grey text on black background format... Well, I let it do its job anyway. Unfortunately, I had to go and left the computer. When I came back a lot of time after, the AVG window was gone and I don't know if it fixed the bad files it found. I restarted to get back in normal mode anyway.

I could not complete a Panda Active scan neither with Firefox nor Internet Explorer (opening IE granted me with virus alerts from AVG 8.0... Cute) because there seemed to be a trojan detected by AVG.

I didn't want to do anything else without a guide so I thought I would post a topic here, seeing how it seems to be a very reliable source for advice on the matter. I'll post my smitfiles.txt and HijackThis logs here so you can help me with solving my issue. I thank you so much for taking the time to read this and reply.

Hello

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Hello

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\1112.dat

Folder::
C:\Program Files\NetFilter
C:\Program Files\LiveAntispy

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\D]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{54d828b2-a120-11dc-893c-001b249e784e}]

Driver::

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Also post a new HijackThis log

I have done exactly what you told me. Thank you so much for these clear and user-friendly steps!

One strange thing that happened after I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware was that I could not restart my computer through conventional means. I mean that clicking start>stop>stop or start>stop>restart didn't work... I waited some time but after a while, I simply clicked on the physical power button to force shut down my mom's pc. It restarted normally.

And now I could change the computer's desktop background! YES! Thank you so much, it worked! :)

Please tell me if I need to do anything else to fix the computer, and any useful tips on protecting it from further attacks. Thanks again!

You have two anti-virus programs, AVG and Avast, you need to remove one of these

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    [kill explorer]
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\WinAntivirusPro
    C:\Program Files\WinAntivirusPro3.8
    purity
    [start explorer]
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Click here to use the F-Secure Online Scanner
  • Then click the Start Scanning button below.
  • You should get a notification (bar on top) to install the activeX. Click on it and select to install the ActiveX.
  • Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
  • In case you are having problems with installing the ActiveX/starting the scan, please read here.
  • Click the Full System Scan button.
  • It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
  • The main scan will start.
  • Once the scan finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
  • It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
  • The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
  • Then click the Show report button and copy and paste what's present under results in your next reply.

Reboot and post a new DSS log

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
