Hey guys,

I hope you can help!!

This is the layout of the situation. I have a desktop with Windows XP Professional. That computer has a ethernet card because the network socket doesnt work. I pick the internet through my router and my router is connected to my modem. I have a brother printer installed and directly connected to this desktop through a USB cable.

I just bought a notebook. It has Vista Home premium 64 Bit. I connect through the Internet through my wireless card. What I want to do is Print to my printer through my desktop and I also want to add a folder in which we can share files between the computers.

Is there any additional info I can help you with?

I really want to do this.. I have no Idea how to do it but if you give me simple instructions I'll get it down like a pro! Both computers are set up with the same workgroup name. And the printer on the xp is set up as sharing printer with a designated name.

Heres the thing too,

When I go into RUN and type \\(my computers name) it doesnt find my CPU. I'm connected through a router that picks up 2 signals, one says just "linksys" and the other one says "linksys_SES_46517" .... the one that says linksys run smooth on my Desktop, it always has great connect. The "linksys_SES_46517" one is a little volatile. My laptop connects through "linksys_SES_46517" most of the time. But when I connect them both through the same connection and try to find the computer nothing comes up.. What can I be doing wrong? Am I getting someone elses signal? the modem is directly connected to the router. ...

HELP.

I hope to hear from you soon! thanks in advance guys!

First lets see if you're on the right wireless. If you're not on the same network then you can't print or share any files within the network.

I'd like to see some more information. Please follow the steps below.
  • Go to Start -> Run.
  • In the Box, type in "cmd".
  • A black box will appear. Type in: "ipconfig /all".
  • A lot of information will appear, Please right click the black window and hit mark.
  • Select every line of text you recieved and hit "enter" to copy.
  • Then paste it into your next reply.
Please follow these instructions on both the desktop and laptop.

We'll go through step by step.

Regards,
Olrik

Alright, I haven't worked with Vista that much, but the basics should be the same and what I'm about to tell you might be under slightly different names as I'm using a Dutch version of Windows.

First, we need to share the printer on the desktop.
To do this, right click the printer and hit "properties".
There will be a tab "Sharing"
Type in "PrinterHome", Apply and OK.

Then go to your vista notebook.
Go to the control panel and open to option for printers.
Right click and "Add new printer".
In the wizard select "Network Printer"
When it asks to search, give the name of a network printer or if it's one over the internet, select name of the network and type in "\\192.168.1.102\PrinterHome"
Follow the rest of the directions and your printer will be set up! :)
