Let me start by saying, thank you. This has taken me hours/ days and I greatly appreciate anyone's help. I believe that I was infected with some strain of Vundo-4. I did a lot of work before finding this site and think I have improved my situation, but would really like some expert advice.

I am running XP Pro with SP3. I am always running McAfee's security suite, although it didn't help me much when I got infected. I have run the following to try and fix the problem; Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, VundoFix, Virtumundobegone, ATF_Cleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Panda's online scan, Trend Micro's online scan, SuperAntiSpyware, HijackThis and ComboFix. The last two I was rather careful with but did run, the others have all been run numerous times. When I was first infected I had numerous pop-ups and I could not turn on windows update. After running ComboFix, I can run windows update and I have not had a pop up since, but I still get a few 'infected' messages from some of the scans... none of which can clean the infection. I also cannot run ComboFix anymore, it seems to freeze up when creating the log maybe because McAfee tries to stop the scripts even though I have disabled McAfee...

Just for info, I ran Spy Sweeper today and it found nothing. When I ran dss.exe (downloaded from your link) it only created a main.txt not an extra. Below is that main.txt and the Kaspersky log. Thanks again!

I believe the two viruses it found were both quarantined by Combofix, but I wouldn't mind having them completely removed and why are so many locked? Like I said, just want to be sure.

Finally, any suggestion on your favorite protection suite would be greatly appreciated. This was 90% my stupid fault for running an app I should not have trusted, but I wouldn't mind a little backup from a good service. Although I believe it will be a long long time before I trust any file again.

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure

• Click Start > Run
• Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
• Click on the Security tab
• Click Reset all zones to default level
• Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
• In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
• Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
